Carryout—the grain expected to remain at the end of a marketing year—is one measure of supply and demand. In an October 2020 example, corn carryout projections fell as prices recovered; that episode illustrates a possible relationship, not a reliable forecast.
What carryout means—and why it matters
Carryout is the amount of a crop expected to be left at the end of its marketing year. It condenses expectations about supply and demand: a larger projected leftover can suggest more available supply, while a smaller one can suggest a tighter balance.
Those expectations can affect buying decisions. An end user who expects ample supplies may be more comfortable buying grain as needed; concern about shrinking availability may make purchasing inventory ahead more attractive. For producers, projected stocks are one consideration when evaluating marketing choices.
Why lower projected carryout may support prices
When forecasts show less grain remaining, market participants may interpret that as tighter supply relative to expected demand. That can be supportive for prices. Bryan Doherty, a senior market advisor and vice president of brokerage solutions at Total Farm Marketing, summarized the tendency this way: “The trend of price often has an inverse relationship with the trend of carryout.”

It is a tendency, not a law of cause and effect. Prices reflect changing expectations and many other influences, and the relationship is not foolproof. A declining carryout projection by itself cannot establish what prices will do next.
The 2020 corn example: falling stocks and recovering prices
In his October 16, 2020 article for Agriculture.com, Doherty described projected U.S. corn carryout for the 2020/2021 season as having been near 2.8 billion bushels earlier, then falling to 2.167 billion bushels in October after subsequent reports reduced the projection. He also described December corn futures as near $3.20 per bushel earlier and near $3.90 later, while carryout declined over two consecutive months.

These are figures reported in that 2020 article, not current stock estimates or live futures prices. The article does not identify the underlying USDA report and its issue date, so the 2.167-billion-bushel figure should not be attributed directly to a specific USDA release on this basis alone. The example shows prices and projected carryout moving in opposite directions during that period; it does not prove that falling carryout caused the price recovery.
How to use carryout alongside other signals
Doherty distinguishes fundamental analysis from technical analysis. Fundamentals examine supply and demand, including expected ending stocks; technical analysis studies price charts and signals. Looking at both can provide a broader view than treating a single stocks estimate as a forecast.

- For a fundamental view: Track how projected carryout changes across reports and consider what the revisions imply about expected supply and demand.
- For a chart view: Compare the stocks trend with price action and chart signals rather than assuming one must confirm the other.
- For a business decision: Consider how the outlook affects your own inventory or selling needs, without treating a general market pattern as an individualized recommendation.
Risk management matters
Forecasting market direction is difficult even when relevant information is available. Doherty recommends considering risk management and mentions stops on futures or options positions with a fixed risk. Futures and options carry substantial risk of loss; whether a position or risk limit is suitable depends on a person’s financial circumstances. Nothing in the historical example establishes that a particular trade is appropriate for any reader.
