What McDonald’s sales figures show
Comparable sales measure sales at restaurants open for at least a year. They help track performance at established locations; they are not the same as total systemwide sales, which include sales across the broader restaurant system.

These are company-reported figures. They show positive comparable-sales growth, although U.S. growth was modest in the second quarter of 2026. They do not reveal why customers spent as they did, and they do not isolate any effect from GLP-1 medication use.
Why GLP-1 drugs are on McDonald’s radar
McDonald’s 2025 Form 10-K lists evolving health practices, including use of weight-loss medications, among factors that could affect consumer behavior and perceptions of the brand. The filing says these practices “may have contradictory implications” and could alter behavior in ways that affect the quick-service restaurant segment or brand perceptions.

At McDonald’s September 2026 investor day, company president Skye Anderson said approximately 30 million Americans use GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, according to the Associated Press report. Treat that as Anderson’s reported estimate, not as an independently verified count of McDonald’s customers. The figure does not establish how often users eat at McDonald’s, how their purchases change, or whether their behavior has affected sales.

What McDonald’s is changing
AP reported that McDonald’s plans to introduce grilled chicken sandwiches and wraps and to experiment with egg bites and bowls. These ideas address demand for protein and different portion formats; the report does not establish that every item will launch everywhere or on the same schedule.
Anderson also linked GLP-1 users’ needs with smaller, more protein-rich meals. AP attributed a separate figure—60 million Americans seeking more protein—to company research discussed at the event. That is a company-reported customer insight, not a count of GLP-1 users, and it does not show how much demand any particular menu item will generate.

The menu moves fit a broader business challenge: adapting to changing preferences while continuing to compete on convenience, value and execution. CEO Chris Kempczinski said at the event, “The winners will be the companies that create more demand and deliver it more efficiently,” as reported by AP. That statement describes the competitive aim; it is not evidence that medication use has already reduced McDonald’s sales.
Why estimates of food-demand impact are not McDonald’s sales forecasts
ING Research’s March 2026 analysis estimated that GLP-1 drugs currently reduce total calorie demand in the EU and UK by about 0.25%. Its estimate assumes 2% adult use and a 15–20% reduction in calorie intake among users. It is a modeled regional estimate, not a direct measurement of restaurant spending, U.S. demand or McDonald’s sales.

The same ING analysis reported that half of GLP-1 users discontinue within a year, citing studies and reasons including cost, side effects and reaching a target weight. That is ING’s reported figure; it does not show what happens to an individual’s eating habits after stopping treatment. Together, these uncertainties make it difficult to turn medication use into a reliable forecast for restaurant demand.

To show that GLP-1 use is hurting McDonald’s, evidence would need to connect medication use to changes in restaurant visits or spending, then separate that effect from other influences on sales. The published results above do not make that connection. McDonald’s risk disclosure establishes that the company is watching the issue, while its results report sales outcomes without attributing them to GLP-1 use.
