VR Resources reported five microdiamonds from drill-core samples collected at its Northway exploration property in northern Ontario. That confirms diamond presence in the tested material, but the early results do not establish a commercially viable deposit, a mineral resource or a mine. The phrase “most promising diamond find in decades” is not supported by a comparative technical assessment.
Where the microdiamonds were found
Northway is a VR Resources exploration property in the James Bay region of northern Ontario. The company describes a previously unknown kimberlite breccia pipe complex beneath Paleozoic limestone and sandstone cover. Its project page notes the property’s proximity to the Ontario Northland rail corridor, but that location alone does not establish that a mine would be practical or economical. What the drilling and sample results show
VR Resources’ initial reconnaissance program drilled three holes into kimberlite breccia. The company reports that nearly 1.3 tonnes of core material from nearly 500 metres of core were submitted for caustic-fusion evaluation. It reported one microdiamond from NW22-001 and four from two intervals in NW23-003, for five in total across the initial program. An Ontario assessment report documents 1,089 kilograms of kimberlite material and four clear, colourless microdiamonds for the drilling covered by that report. That count applies to the report’s documented work; it is not inconsistent with the company’s later total of five, which includes the separate microdiamond reported from NW22-001. Why a large target is not yet a proven deposit
VR Resources describes a magnetic anomaly about 900 to 1,200 metres across and reports kimberlite intersections spanning roughly 700 metres laterally and 320 metres vertically. These are exploration dimensions: the anomaly is not proof that its full extent is kimberlite, and the dimensions of the drilled intersections do not establish a pipe-wide volume, diamond grade or resource. The company has also reported indicator-mineral observations, including chromite grains plotting in the diamond-stability field and mantle-derived xenoliths and minerals. These findings can help guide exploration, but they do not measure how many diamonds a representative volume of rock contains or whether those diamonds have economic value. What remains unknown about economic potential
Microdiamonds in drill-core samples are evidence that diamonds occur in the tested material. They are not, by themselves, evidence of an economically mineable deposit. The reported results do not establish:
- a representative commercial-scale diamond grade across the pipe;
- the size distribution, quality and market value of a representative diamond sample;
- a mineral resource or reserve;
- an economic study, mine plan or decision to develop a mine.
Answering those questions would require further representative sampling and technical work, including assessment of diamond grade and value. The cited results do not show that such work has established commercial viability at Northway.

Is it the most promising diamond find in decades?
The available technical evidence does not support that ranking. The characterization “most promising diamond find in decades” appeared in an October 8, 2025 article, but the materials cited here provide no comparative study evaluating Northway against diamond discoveries over several decades. The defensible description is narrower: Northway is an early-stage exploration discovery where a reconnaissance drilling program recovered microdiamonds from sampled core. The company’s project page and 2023 announcement describe the initial reconnaissance work; they do not establish whether later drilling or results have been announced. No current exploration plan or later result should be inferred from those sources.
