A reliable current net-worth figure for Micky Ward is not established by the available reporting. The best-documented financial figures are historical boxing purses: a 2010 report says he earned nearly $3 million across his three Arturo Gatti fights. That is not the same as take-home income or net worth. A purse is a fight payment; take-home income depends on deductions and expenses; net worth is the value of current assets minus liabilities.
Is Micky Ward’s net worth known?
No verified current net-worth amount is established in the available sources. They do not provide a current accounting of Ward’s assets, debts, taxes, investments, or other income. Online estimates that lack a documented basis should not be treated as confirmed figures.

The distinction matters: reported purses show what a boxer was scheduled to earn or was reported to have earned for particular bouts. They do not reveal how much remained after taxes, training and travel costs, management or promotional arrangements, or later spending and investment.
What did Micky Ward earn in the Arturo Gatti fights?
Ron Borges’s December 3, 2010 Boston Herald report, reprinted by the Massachusetts Film Office, says Ward earned nearly $3 million in the three Gatti fights. That is a historical trilogy-level report, not a net-worth calculation. The individual bout figures reported at different times describe specific fights and deal terms; they should not be added to the trilogy figure as if they were separate from it.
#1 Best Overall
- Factory sealed DVD
- Second Gatti fight: Thomas Hauser’s December 2002 Irish America feature said Ward and Gatti were each scheduled to receive $1.2 million for their November 2002 rematch. This is a scheduled purse reported at the time.
- Third Gatti fight: The Washington Post reported on June 5, 2003 that Ward was set to earn $750,000. The same article said his second Gatti fight had been his first seven-figure payday.
The Washington Post also reported that Ward could have earned more than the third-fight purse by changing promoters, but chose to stay with Lou DiBella. These accounts show why bout amounts need their date and context: a scheduled purse for one fight is not interchangeable with an aggregate reported for a trilogy.
What do other reported purses show?
Hauser’s December 2002 Irish America feature said Ward received $30,000 for his fight against Vince Phillips, his largest purse up to that point. The figure gives a sense of how his reported fight earnings changed over time, but it is not an accounting of his total career income.
Rank #2
The Washington Post’s June 2003 article listed Ward’s record as 38–12 at that time. That was a contemporaneous snapshot, not his final career record, and it does not establish a financial total.
Why fight earnings do not establish net worth
Even a well-sourced career purse figure cannot answer what Ward is worth now. The reporting cited here does not establish what he paid in taxes, how purses were divided or spent, what he earned after boxing, or what assets and liabilities he holds today. Without that information, converting historical gross purse reports into a present net-worth estimate would be speculation.

Penguin Random House describes Ward as a retired light-welterweight professional boxer from Lowell, Massachusetts. It notes his World Boxing Union light-welterweight title win over Shea Neary and his three-fight rivalry with Gatti. Ward’s life also inspired the 2010 film The Fighter, with Mark Wahlberg portraying Ward and Christian Bale playing his half-brother Dicky Eklund. The Massachusetts Film Office’s reprint describes the film as loosely based on Ward’s life; the movie is not evidence of his finances.
For more about Ward’s own story, Penguin Random House lists his book A Warrior’s Heart. In Hauser’s 2002 feature, Ward reflected on his rise with the words, “good things happen when you don’t give up.”
