Melinda French Gates said her marriage to Bill Gates ended after multiple problems eroded her trust—not because of one moment or a single incident. In a March 2022 interview with CBS Mornings co-host Gayle King, she said the relationship had reached a point where it no longer felt healthy to her. She also said she disliked Bill Gates’s meetings with Jeffrey Epstein, while making clear that the divorce involved “many things.”
What Melinda French Gates said led to the breakup
French Gates described a buildup rather than a single decisive event. “It wasn’t one moment or one specific thing that happened,” she told King. She said she had believed they might work through some issues, but eventually concluded the relationship was no longer healthy for her and that she could not trust what they had.
Her account is a personal explanation of her decision, not a complete independent record of everything that happened within the marriage. She did not identify one issue as the sole cause.
What she said about Jeffrey Epstein
King asked French Gates about Bill Gates’s meetings with Jeffrey Epstein. French Gates said, “As I said, it’s not one thing, it was many things. But I did not like that he’d had meetings with Jeffrey Epstein, no.” She also said questions about the relationship between Gates and Epstein should be directed to Gates.

That exchange establishes that she objected to the meetings and included them among the issues she discussed. It does not establish that the meetings alone caused the divorce.
What the couple announced in 2021
On May 3, 2021, after 27 years of marriage, the couple announced that they had decided to end it. Their joint statement said they had given “a lot of thought and a lot of work” to the relationship and no longer believed they could grow together as a couple in the next phase of their lives. It also said they would continue working together at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Axios reported the announcement and statement.

The joint statement described the decision in broad terms. French Gates’s later interview offered more about her own experience, but neither account provides a full explanation of all the private circumstances.
