Melinda French Gates announced an additional $1 billion commitment through 2026 to advance women’s power and influence globally. Reproductive health and rights are part of the broader effort, not its sole focus: Pivotal’s five allocations also cover workplace barriers, organizations, global leaders and the funding ecosystem.

What did Melinda French Gates announce?

On May 28, 2024, French Gates announced the commitment through Pivotal, the group of organizations she founded. Pivotal described the funding as support for women’s power and influence across areas including health, work, organizations, global leadership and philanthropy. The announcement does not say that every dollar is for reproductive rights.

“Decades of research on economics, wellbeing, and governance make it clear that investing in women and girls benefits everyone,” French Gates said in the announcement, where she was identified as philanthropist and founder of Pivotal. Pivotal’s May 2024 announcement was updated December 11, 2024.

How is the $1 billion allocated?

Pivotal listed five areas for the commitment. The amounts below are the categories in its announcement; together they total $1 billion.

Allocation Amount Stated focus
Workplace barriers $150 million Dismantling barriers for women in the United States
Organizations $235 million Support for organizations
Global leaders $240 million Support for 12 global leaders
Women’s health $250 million Improving women’s health globally
Funding ecosystem $125 million Strengthening the funding ecosystem

The categories are broader than reproductive health alone. Pivotal’s announcement describes the health allocation as global, while the workplace allocation is specifically focused on the United States.

Who will receive the money?

The announcement identifies funding areas rather than naming every recipient or setting out a complete payment schedule. It specifies 12 global leaders for the $240 million allocation, but its other categories are described more broadly. The $250 million women’s-health allocation was later associated with Action for Women’s Health. Pivotal says that initiative awarded $250 million to more than 80 winners in 2025; that is a reported award milestone, not an independent accounting of every dollar in the original pledge.

In a later account of the plan, the Associated Press described $200 million for existing U.S. nonprofits supporting women and girls, $240 million in grants to 12 global leaders, and $250 million for organizations working on women’s mental and physical health through an open call. Pivotal’s own announcement is the clearer source for the complete allocation structure: it lists $235 million for organizations and a separate $125 million for the funding ecosystem. The AP has acknowledged receiving support from Pivotal for some of its coverage.

Pivotal’s current giving page reports that it pledged $2 billion to women and families since 2019 and committed $491 million in charitable support to partners in 2025. Those figures are Pivotal’s reported organization-wide milestones; they are not a revised total or a disbursement audit of the May 2024 commitment. Pivotal’s giving page also reports the Action for Women’s Health awards.

Does Pivotal’s pledge mean the money has all been paid?

No. An announced commitment, a grant award and a completed payment are different stages. Pivotal’s announcement establishes the amounts it planned to commit, and its later giving page reports certain awards and charitable-support figures. The sources cited here do not provide a final audited reconciliation showing how much of each 2024 category has been disbursed. It is therefore more accurate to describe the $1 billion as an announced commitment and to identify later awards separately.

Which Pivotal organization handles the work?

Pivotal describes three components with distinct roles. Its structure matters because charitable grantmaking, advocacy and direct investment are not the same activity.

  • Pivotal Philanthropies: a 501(c)(3) private-foundation structure for charitable grantmaking and impact investing.
  • Pivotal Initiatives Fund: a 501(c)(4) focused on policy and advocacy.
  • Pivotal Ventures: an LLC focused on direct investments and partnerships.

Pivotal’s description of its structure distinguishes these functions; the existence of separate entities does not by itself identify which one made a particular payment.

How does this relate to other women’s-health funding?

Several later or separate initiatives address women’s health, but they should not be added to or confused with French Gates’ May 2024 Pivotal commitment.

  • Gates Foundation: The foundation announced a separate $2.5 billion women’s-health research and development commitment through 2030, supporting more than 40 innovations across maternal, menstrual, gynecological and sexual health. The foundation cited a 2021 McKinsey-led analysis finding that 1% of health research and innovation investment went to female-specific conditions beyond oncology. The foundation’s announcement concerns a different institution and funding commitment.
  • Pivotal and Wellcome Leap: The two organizations announced a separate $100 million women’s-health research partnership on September 10, 2025, with programs expected to begin in 2026. In that announcement, French Gates said: “Women’s health is chronically underfunded, chronically under-researched, and, as a result, not well understood. We need to look at this broken status quo through new eyes and stop tolerating women’s pain and suffering.” Wellcome Leap’s announcement describes the partnership.

Why does the funding gap matter?

The Women’s Philanthropy Institute reported that women and girls received $8.8 billion of $471.4 billion in U.S. charitable giving in 2020, the latest year in the analysis AP cited. That is a historical figure, not a current-year estimate. It provides context for the funding ecosystem allocation, but it does not establish how Pivotal’s own grants were distributed. The institute’s analysis reports the 2020 charitable-giving figures.
