TechBullion reported on August 22, 2024, that Meta shares had risen 13% “this month” and were less than 1% below their then-record closing price. The article linked investor enthusiasm to CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s explanation of Meta’s AI plans and to the company’s reported second-quarter results. Its headline phrase “sells AI vision” means that Zuckerberg persuaded investors of AI’s business potential; it does not mean he sold Meta shares.

What the 13% figure refers to

The 13% increase is a historical claim about August 2024, not a current return. TechBullion’s August 22 article did not specify the start and end trading dates or show how it calculated the change, so the figure should be understood as what that article reported, rather than as a separately verified market calculation. Its statement that the stock was less than 1% below its record closing price also described the market at that time, not today.

TechBullion’s August 22, 2024 article framed the move as investors responding to Zuckerberg’s AI pitch alongside Meta’s second-quarter performance.

Did Zuckerberg sell Meta shares?

Not according to the story described by the headline. Here, “sells” is used in the sense of making a persuasive case: Zuckerberg explained why Meta was investing in AI and how the company expected that investment to benefit its business. The article does not report a sale of Meta stock by Zuckerberg connected to the share-price rise.

Why the article connected AI to Meta’s stock

Potential business benefits

TechBullion described AI as helping improve ad targeting and content recommendations on Facebook and Instagram. Better targeting could support the value of Meta’s advertising business, while recommendations could help surface content users may want to see. These are business rationales for AI investment, not proof that AI caused a particular change in Meta’s share price.

Second-quarter results

The article also said Meta’s second-quarter 2024 revenue and earnings per share exceeded analyst expectations. It treated those results as part of the context for investor sentiment, rather than isolating AI as the sole explanation for the reported monthly gain.

What analysts said about Zuckerberg’s explanation

The quotations below are reproduced as TechBullion attributed them; the original interviews or transcripts were not available for independent verification.

  • Gene Munster, managing partner of Deepwater Asset Management, called it Zuckerberg’s “best earnings call as a public CEO,” praising his explanation of AI’s near-term and long-term benefits and their timing.
  • Doug Anmuth of JPMorgan said Meta “continues to earn the right to spend big on GenAI.”
  • Alec Young, chief investment strategist at Mapsignals, contrasted how Google and Microsoft communicated their spending plans, saying Microsoft “sold it a little better” even though the companies were “effectively doing the same thing.”
  • Andrew Ye, investment strategist at Global X ETFs, said Meta had “arguably articulated its vision of AI integration more clearly than its competitors.”

The comparison in these comments concerns how companies explained AI investment and expected benefits. It is attributed investor commentary, not a controlled comparison of their strategies or results.

How to interpret the spending figure

TechBullion also reported, citing Bloomberg data, that Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon and Meta spent a combined $55 billion on capital expenditures in the quarter ending June 2024, up 55% year over year. The underlying Bloomberg publication was not independently available for verification. The figure is for those five companies together, not Meta alone, and describes one quarter rather than a recurring annual amount.
