Re:

Marvel Snap Was the Start of Nuverse’s Mobile Gaming Ambition

In February 2023, Nuverse presented Marvel Snap as a flagship Western-market launch and one part of a broader global publishing strategy. The company described plans to combine local market teams, international coordination, and partnerships around games and established intellectual property. That interview documents an ambition—not proof that Nuverse achieved mobile gaming domination or that those plans remain active today.

What Nuverse did for Marvel Snap

In a February 1, 2023, GamesBeat interview, Tom van Dam, then identified as Nuverse’s senior director of global business, described Nuverse as ByteDance’s gaming unit and said it was the global publisher for Marvel Snap. He outlined a role extending beyond distribution: marketing, user acquisition, brand work, customer support, operational support, and events connected to the game.

That breadth is important to the story. Nuverse’s account was not simply that it had helped release a card game; it was that a publisher could support a game across launch, player acquisition, service, and regional promotion. The interview does not quantify the impact of those activities, so it cannot establish how much any one of them contributed to the game’s performance.

How Nuverse described its global publishing model

Van Dam called the approach “decentralized global publishing”: regional teams would shape a game’s approach for local audiences while coordinating with an overarching strategy. He summarized it this way:

“There’s a team in the U.S., a China team, one in Japan and other places, and they work together on a certain game to give it the best approach locally, but then tie it into a global plan driven by a global strategy.”

He pointed to Marvel Snap’s Western performance and success in Japan and Korea as examples of this approach. Those were the executive’s characterizations in the interview, not independently audited market results. The account therefore supports what Nuverse said its model was; it does not provide a measured comparison showing that decentralized publishing outperformed another strategy.

Games and partnerships in the 2023 portfolio account

Van Dam’s examples suggested that Nuverse wanted to work across different kinds of games and markets, rather than build its plans around a single launch. In the interview, he named Marvel and One Piece as major IP partnerships and said Nuverse had a deal with Electronic Arts involving the Red Alert IP in China.

He also cited Ragnarok and a Red Alert 4X game as successes in Asian markets, and described Earth: Revival as a forthcoming product intended to reach Western gamers. These are portfolio descriptions made in 2023; the interview does not verify current availability, continuing partnerships, or present-day performance.

Why the strategy was not a guaranteed formula for a hit

Asked whether it was difficult to break through in a mobile market where established titles could dominate for years, van Dam described the market as unpredictable and competitive. He argued that a game’s prospects could improve with a strong development team, experienced publishing support, local market knowledge, and substantial marketing resources.

That was his assessment, not a proven recipe. The interview offers no independently sourced performance statistics or market-size figures to show that these inputs reliably produce hits. Its more useful point is the distinction between a publisher’s proposed capabilities and the uncertain outcome: Nuverse could describe the support it intended to provide, but it could not make the market predictable.

What the interview said about monetization and PC plans

At the time of the interview, van Dam said Marvel Snap used season passes and bundles rather than relying on the familiar collectible-card-game approach of selling card packs. Marvel Snap’s official “New Cards and How to Get ’Em” documentation describes digital card-acquisition mechanics; it is not evidence about Nuverse’s current corporate status or the ongoing terms of its publishing strategy.

Van Dam also described a PC version as a planned milestone for 2023. That statement records a plan as expressed in the 2023 interview; it should not be read as confirmation of current platform plans or status.

What this account can—and cannot—establish

The interview provides a historical snapshot of how a Nuverse executive framed the company’s ambitions: Marvel Snap was a flagship Western launch, supported by a broad publisher role, within a strategy that joined regional expertise to global coordination. It also records examples of partnerships and other games that Nuverse highlighted at the time.

It does not establish whether Nuverse’s 2023 growth plans succeeded, whether the named partnerships and portfolio plans remain active, or what Nuverse’s current corporate status is. Claims about the strategy’s results or the company’s present-day position would require evidence beyond this interview.
