Mark Zuckerberg purchased a reported 962-acre tract on Kauai earlier in 2025, bringing his reported island holdings to more than 2,300 acres. The new parcel’s sale price was not publicly listed in the records WIRED reviewed; a source close to the sale estimated it at more than $65 million. The separate figure of more than $300 million refers to reported investment in the broader compound, not the price of this purchase.
How much land did Zuckerberg buy on Kauai?
WIRED reported on July 21, 2025, that Zuckerberg bought 962 acres of ranchland earlier that year. The headline description of “1,000 more acres” rounds that reported figure. The tract was on the inland side of the road across from the existing compound, and public records described by WIRED identified the seller as the Mary Lucas Trust Estate.
WIRED placed the purchase against earlier reported acquisitions: about 700 acres in 2014, more than 560 acres of ranchland by spring 2021, and another 110 acres later in 2021, including land containing Kaloko Dam. These are historical reported figures, not a parcel-by-parcel title accounting. After the 2025 purchase, WIRED put the family’s Kauai holdings at more than 2,300 acres.
What do the reported dollar figures mean?
The exact amount paid for the new tract was not listed in the sale records WIRED reviewed. A source close to the sale estimated a price of more than $65 million, while property records reportedly put the tract’s market value at around $75 million. An estimated price and a recorded market value are different measures; neither establishes the confirmed transaction price.

WIRED described the investment in the overall compound as exceeding $300 million. That is a broad estate investment figure, not a price tag for the 962-acre addition. WIRED also compared the estimate with Kauai County’s $311 million fiscal year 2024 operating-expense budget; one is an estimated private compound investment and the other an annual public budget.
Architectural Digest’s July 23, 2025, summary likewise described an approximately 1,000-acre addition and a $300 million estate, drawing on WIRED’s account rather than providing independent confirmation of the land-buy figures.

What is on the estate, and what is planned for the new land?
Architectural Digest described the existing compound as including two mansions, a gym, tennis court, guesthouses, treehouses, and water and energy systems. WIRED’s 2025 reporting also described guest buildings, ranch operations, water infrastructure, a tunnel, an underground shelter, and security systems, drawing on reporting and permits. These are reported descriptions, not an independent inspection of the property.
The long-term purpose of the newly acquired tract was not established in WIRED’s reporting. A source close to the sale called it “great cattle grass,” suggesting possible ranch use without confirming a final plan for the parcel.

Zuckerberg representative Brandi Hoffine Barr told WIRED that the family continues ranching, farming, and conservation work at Ko’olau Ranch. She said most of the land is devoted to agriculture, including cattle ranching, organic ginger, macadamia nut and turmeric farming, native plant restoration, and endangered species protection. Barr also said the family canceled the previous owner’s plans for 80 luxury homes. Those are the representative’s descriptions of broader estate activity, not independent verification of every use or a specific plan for the new acres.
What has been reported about burial sites and local concerns?
WIRED reported that Julian Ako, a descendant of a family connected to the property, gained access and identified and registered his great-grandmother’s and her brother’s graves with Hawaii’s Department of Land and Natural Resources. An agency document cited “the probability (based on oral testimony) of additional burial sites.” That wording indicates possible additional locations based on testimony, not confirmed discoveries.

Barr told WIRED that the estate had known about the family burial plot since 2015 and had fenced and maintained it. She said workers are required by regulations to report inadvertent discoveries of iwi, or ancestral bones, and WIRED reported that visits to the known graves are coordinated with the ranch team. Ako raised concerns to WIRED that worker nondisclosure agreements could discourage people from speaking publicly if remains were uncovered; that is his concern, not evidence that a discovery has been concealed.
WIRED’s account also described local nonprofit donations and construction jobs, alongside skepticism about large mainland land purchases and the scale of the property. Kauai Community College Native Hawaiian studies professor Puali‘i Rossi voiced concern that this kind of activity could change the island’s character over time. His remarks represent his view, not a poll or a measured community consensus.
