The Monkey Bar on Pinjarra Road was due to serve its final drinks on Friday, 7 March 2025. The Mandurah Times announced the planned closure on 5 March, and a follow-up report on 11 March confirmed the venue had shut. The reason for the closure was not known when that follow-up was published.
When did The Monkey Bar close?
The Mandurah Times reported on 5 March 2025 that the bar would close permanently after trading on Friday, 7 March. The Music reported on 11 March that it had shut. These reports establish the closure in March 2025; they do not establish the premises’ status in 2026 or whether another business later opened there.
PerthNow’s Mandurah Times report, published 5 March 2025, gave the planned final-drinks date. The Music’s 11 March 2025 follow-up confirmed the bar had closed.
How the Pinjarra Road venue became The Monkey Bar
The Mandurah Times reported that the building had previously been a bank. In 2000, the Collins family turned it into a pub called Slug and Hare. It reopened as The Monkey Bar in 2013, giving it roughly 12 years under that name before the 2025 closure.

What the closure meant for staff
The Mandurah Times reported that about seven staff were expected to be out of work. Venue manager Carrie Salter said the team would remain available to work if a buyer emerged. That was a possibility discussed at the time, not confirmation that a buyer appeared or that staff continued at the site.
Salter also said staff had issued more than 80 bans over a one-year period to patrons who behaved badly. That figure was her reported account, not an independently audited total.

Was a buyer or renovation confirmed?
No. Managers saw potential in the building but said it needed work. Hannah Wright urged a future owner to change the name, saying the existing reputation would remain associated with it. Their comments reflected staff views and hopes; the reports did not confirm a sale, renovation or successor venue.

The reason was not established in the available reports. The Music explicitly said it was unknown when its 11 March 2025 follow-up ran. Neither report confirms a cause, so the venue’s history or past incidents should not be treated as an explanation for the owner’s decision.
