During the call, speak clearly, listen to the whole question, and ask for clarification if you need it. A quiet place, a charged phone, and a few notes can help you stay focused.
Before the phone interview: make a practical plan
Confirm the details
Write down the interview date and time, the interviewer’s name, the company, the role, and the number the employer will use. Confirm the correct callback number in case the call drops. If you have more than one interview scheduled, note which position this call is about. The UK National Careers Service recommends checking these details before the call: Phone interview tips.
Research the role and prepare examples
Read the job description and learn about the employer. Then reread the résumé or application you submitted. Pick a few examples that show the skills the role calls for; be ready to explain what you did and what happened. The National Careers Service suggests STAR—Situation, Task, Action, Result—as one way to organize examples. Use it as a structure, not a script: plan the key points so your answer sounds natural. See its broader interview advice.
Prepare a few questions
Bring two or three questions for the interviewer. You might ask what a typical working day looks like, what training or development is available, or how the interviewer came to work for the company. Choose questions that matter to you and have not already been answered during the call.

- ⚠️ DESK PHONE ONLY — Check Your Port Before Buying: This is an RJ9 headset designed exclusively for desk phones. It uses a 4-pin RJ9 connector — NOT compatible with computers, laptops, tablets, or smartphones. RJ9 wiring varies by phone brand. If your microphone doesn't work, try all 3 included adapters — different brands use different pin configurations
- Tuned Exclusively for Calls & Conference Audio — Not Designed for Music Playback The headset’s speaker drivers are calibrated to deliver crisp, intelligible speech during phone calls. Its sound signature prioritizes spoken dialogue: voices come across clear and natural, yet the rich, immersive sound needed for music, movies and gaming cannot be achieved.
- Pro Noise-Canceling Microphone: Flexible uni-directional boom mic filters out office chatter, keyboard clicks, and AC hum. Your callers hear your voice with studio-like clarity — not your environment. Adjustable boom arm for perfect positioning
- Single-Ear Awareness Design: Mono design keeps one ear free — stay aware of teammates, ambient office sounds, and doorbells while on calls. Ideal for call center agents, receptionists, and collaborative open offices
- All-Day Lightweight Comfort: Ultra-soft PU leather ear cushion with ventilated design + adjustable headband. Designed for 8+ hour shifts without ear fatigue. Cloud-like fit that stays comfortable through back-to-back meetings
Set up your space
Choose a quiet place where you can speak without interruption. If other people are at home, let them know when the call is expected. Keep your résumé, job description, and brief notes within reach; a pen and paper or a laptop are enough. Charge your phone and silence unrelated notifications. Avoid making the notes so detailed that you feel compelled to read them word for word.
Rehearse aloud
Practice answering likely questions aloud to check that your examples are easy to follow and your pace is clear. Ask a trusted friend or family member to run a mock call, or contact a careers adviser if one is available to you. If you prefer to practice alone, record yourself and listen back for clarity, pace, and whether you sound engaged. These are options, not requirements; choose one that fits your access, budget, and comfort with recording.

During the call: be clear, focused, and engaged
Be ready before the scheduled time
Be settled and ready about ten minutes early. When the call begins, be polite and professional. Since the interviewer cannot see you, use a clear, engaged tone to convey interest.
Listen first, then answer directly
Let the interviewer finish the question, pause briefly, and then answer the point they asked about. Use a relevant example rather than listing every achievement on your résumé. If you did not hear or understand the question, ask them to repeat or clarify it; if the line is poor, say so. A short pause can also help prevent you from talking over the interviewer.

Take only useful notes
Write down details you may need later, such as the role’s responsibilities, a date, or the next step in the process. Keep note-taking light enough that you can continue listening. The U.S. Department of Labor describes an interview as a two-way discussion, so use the conversation to consider whether the role fits your goals as well as to explain your qualifications: Interview Tips.
Ask your questions and clarify what happens next
When the interviewer invites questions, ask the ones you prepared that are still relevant. Before the call ends, ask when you might expect to hear about the outcome if the interviewer has not already given you a timeline. Thank them for their time.

If the employer has not provided a response timeline, the National Careers Service says a follow-up email or call may be appropriate. Its general interview guide provides broader advice on following up.
Make arrangements that work for you
Not every candidate has the same communication, hearing, mobility, or caregiving needs. If you need an adjustment to make the interview accessible, raise the request with the employer in advance where possible. The National Careers Service’s interview advice points candidates with disabilities to Scope for guidance on asking for adjustments.
