Managing Amazon inventory means balancing three things: having enough stock to meet demand, staying within available FBA capacity, and avoiding inventory that cannot sell or sits long enough to create extra costs. A repeatable process is more reliable than following a single replenishment number: check demand and supplier timing, confirm capacity before shipping, then review stranded and aging stock.
Amazon’s tools can inform those decisions, but their recommendations are not mandatory and availability or rules may vary by marketplace and account. The steps below focus on the US Seller Central experience; confirm live account details before committing inventory or making a removal decision.
How do I manage Amazon FBA inventory?
Use a regular review cycle for each SKU rather than relying on a one-time stock target. The goal is to align expected demand with the time it takes to replenish, the capacity Amazon makes available, and the financial exposure of holding excess stock.
- Review demand and timing. Check sales history, forecasts, seasonality, supplier lead time, and transit time. In the US, Amazon’s Restock Inventory tool uses sales history, demand forecasts, seasonality, and seller-configured replenishment settings to provide recommended quantities and ship dates.
- Check the assumptions behind the recommendation. Review settings such as lead time, case-pack quantity, replenishment frequency, and supply-chain configuration. Update them when the supplier, shipping route, or sales pattern changes.
- Check capacity before creating a shipment. Amazon describes FBA capacity limits by storage type. Review usage and remaining capacity in Capacity Monitor before building a shipment, then inspect any available Capacity Manager options in the account.
- Choose a shipment quantity that fits the business. Consider the chance of a stockout against storage exposure and cash tied up in stock. Amazon’s suggested quantity is an input, not an obligation.
- Revisit the plan after meaningful changes. Recheck when demand shifts, a supplier misses a lead-time estimate, a season approaches, or Amazon updates the account’s capacity view.
Amazon’s description of the Restock Inventory recommendations is available in its US Seller Central help page. The tool’s output cannot replace seller-specific judgment about supplier reliability, cash flow, or the cost of a stockout.

How much inventory should I send to Amazon?
There is no single quantity that works for every SKU. A useful starting point is to compare the coverage implied by your demand forecast with the full replenishment lead time, then adjust for uncertainty and constraints. Include supplier production or processing time, transit, and the time needed for inventory to become available for sale.
Amazon’s recommendation can help frame the decision, but assess it against these factors:
Rank #2
- Demand uncertainty: Stable sales support a more predictable plan than a product with volatile or seasonal demand.
- Replenishment reliability: Longer or less predictable supplier and transit lead times increase the risk of running out before the next delivery.
- Capacity: The quantity must fit the capacity currently shown for the relevant storage type.
- Storage and aging exposure: Sending more than demand can absorb may leave stock sitting in FBA and expose it to policy-defined charges.
- Cash tied up in inventory: Excess stock can restrict funds available for other operating needs.
- Alternative fulfillment options: Compare FBA with merchant fulfillment or a separately evaluated storage and distribution option where those routes suit the product and operation.
Amazon’s Restock Inventory settings allow sellers to configure replenishment assumptions such as lead time, case pack, frequency, and supply-chain setup. Review those inputs when a recommendation seems out of step with actual operations rather than treating the displayed number as a fixed rule.
How should I monitor FBA capacity?
Capacity is an operational constraint, not just a shipment-planning detail. Amazon says limits apply by storage type and directs sellers to review capacity usage and remaining availability in Capacity Monitor. Check the current view in Seller Central before preparing shipments; published rules and available limits can change.

Amazon also refers to Capacity Manager as a way to request additional capacity. Whether a request option is available and what terms apply should be confirmed in the live account. Do not assume that a request will be granted or that a limit shown earlier will still apply.
Amazon’s historical notice said a single monthly capacity limit per storage type took effect on March 1, 2023, replacing weekly restock and quarterly storage limits. That date describes a past policy change, not necessarily the current mechanics. For current planning, use the live Seller Central capacity pages and Amazon’s FBA capacity guidance.

How do I plan for seasonal inventory?
Seasonality can change demand and the amount of stock you need well before a peak begins. Amazon’s seasonal planning material points sellers to several resources, but none guarantees capacity, sales, or savings. Check availability and terms in your account.
- Capacity Monitor: Review current usage and remaining capacity as you plan seasonal shipments.
- Capacity Manager: Check whether an additional-capacity request is available for your account.
- AWD: Evaluate Amazon Warehousing and Distribution as a separate storage and distribution option; confirm current eligibility and terms before relying on it.
- FBA Inventory recommendations and demand forecasting: Use available forecasts and recommendations as planning inputs, then compare them with your own sales pattern, supplier timing, and risk tolerance.
Amazon’s seasonal inventory planning guidance describes these resources. Build a plan around the season’s expected demand and your actual supply chain, and avoid treating a forecast or capacity request as a guarantee.

What should I do with stranded inventory?
Stranded inventory has no associated active offer and therefore is not available for sale. In Seller Central, use Amazon’s Fix stranded inventory workflow to identify the displayed reason and its recommended action. Correct the listing or offer problem before deciding to remove the units; the right fix depends on the reason shown for that inventory.
- Open the stranded-inventory view in Seller Central and locate the affected SKU.
- Read the specific stranded reason and the recommended action shown for it.
- Resolve the underlying listing or offer issue where possible, then verify that the offer is active.
- If the inventory cannot or should not be returned to sale, assess the available removal choices and their costs before submitting a removal order.
Amazon’s Fix stranded inventory help page explains the workflow. Avoid using removal as the default first step: it may be less reversible or more costly than correcting the listing, depending on the case.
How can I reduce the risk of aged inventory charges?
Review inventory age regularly and make an active decision about units that are no longer moving: adjust the offer or listing where appropriate, plan a removal, or change future replenishment. The best action depends on the product’s sales prospects, storage exposure, and the cost and reversibility of removing it.
Amazon’s removal help result reports a change to the aged inventory surcharge effective January 15, 2026. The applicable threshold and amount depend on the live fee policy and marketplace, so verify the current fee page in Seller Central before estimating charges or choosing a removal date. Amazon’s removal order guidance is a starting point for reviewing removal options; it is not a substitute for checking the current fee schedule.

A practical review checklist
- Are the sales history and demand forecast still representative of current demand?
- Do the replenishment settings reflect actual supplier and transit lead times?
- Does the proposed shipment fit the capacity currently shown for its storage type?
- Is the quantity justified after weighing stockout risk against cash and storage exposure?
- Are any units stranded, and what reason does Seller Central display?
- Are older units likely to incur a policy-defined charge, and have you checked the current marketplace fee page?
