Mary Street Bakery brought back cash in June 2024 after owner Paul Aron said staff were being abused by customers upset about the bakery’s pandemic-era cashless policy. Aron also said some customers found it difficult to pay without cash and he did not want to alienate them. Accepting cash, however, meant more counting and reconciliation work and added difficulty banking takings.
Why did Mary Street Bakery start accepting cash again?
In reports published on 6 June 2024, owner Paul Aron said the immediate reason for the reversal was staff abuse over the cashless policy. He was quoted in PerthNow saying, “The reason we’ve gone back is because staff were getting abused.” PerthNow and Baking Business attributed their quotations to Aron speaking to WA Today; neither report described a direct interview with him.
Aron said the bakery had adopted cashless payments during the pandemic. While he described the approach as saving time, he said some customers struggled to pay without cash and he did not want to alienate them. The decision therefore involved a trade-off: refusing cash reduced cash-handling work, but could make payment harder for some customers and contribute to conflict at the counter.
What made handling cash difficult for the bakery?
Aron described operational burdens rather than a measured business-wide cost. In PerthNow’s account, he said stores had to count cash in the morning, afternoon and at closing, while the accounting team reconciled seven cash drawers and investigated unders and overs. Does Mary Street Bakery accept cash now?
The available official menu evidence is location- and date-specific, so it does not establish one current policy for every store. Menus for Highgate and City Beach located for June 2025 say cash is accepted as an alternative to card payment. A March 2024 West Leederville menu, by contrast, said “WE ACCEPT CARD PAYMENTS ONLY.” Check with the particular store for its current payment options rather than assuming the same policy applies at all locations. Mary Street Bakery’s official site lists Highgate, West Leederville, City Beach, QV1 and Allendale Square; the location list alone does not confirm payment methods.

What was the connection to the cash debate in Australia?
The 2024 reports noted that the Keeping Cash Transactions in Australia 2024 Bill had been introduced. That is historical context, not evidence of the bill’s present legal status. The reports and located menus do not establish whether it is now in force or what obligations it would impose on this bakery.
