Decide what social media should help the business achieve, learn what the intended audience values, and plan content and measurement around those choices. There is no universally correct posting frequency or guaranteed result; the right approach depends on your objective, audience, and capacity.
How do you create a social media marketing strategy?
Move from ad hoc posting to deliberate choices by linking each step to the next: business need, audience, content, and evidence of progress. Hootsuite’s social media marketing strategy guide supports the durable planning principles of aligning goals with business objectives and researching the audience. Its older guidance should not be treated as a source for current platform tactics or specifications.
1. Choose a business outcome
Identify what the organization needs social media to contribute to. Make the goal specific enough to guide decisions about what to publish and what evidence to review. An active account is not itself a business outcome: activity only matters insofar as it serves the goal.
2. Understand the audience
Define the people you intend to reach and what they want to see. Use that understanding to make channel and content choices from the start, rather than adding audience research after a campaign is already planned.

3. Plan content and publishing you can sustain
Build a manageable plan that connects audience needs with the chosen business goal. For each planned item, be clear about whom it is for and what role it plays. Revisit the plan when the objective, audience, or platform context changes.
4. Choose channels and tools by fit
Compare options using audience fit, the business objective, suitable content formats, measurement capabilities, and the effort required to operate them. Platform features and rules change, so verify current details directly before making a channel or tool choice. Scheduling or analytics software may help with execution, but it is optional; assess whether its current capabilities suit your needs before adopting it.

How often should a business post on social media?
There is no evidence here for one posting frequency that is best for every business or platform. Choose a cadence your team can maintain while producing content that serves the audience and goal, then review whether the plan is working. A schedule is a practical constraint to manage, not a result in itself.
How do you know if social media marketing is working?
Review performance against the objective the strategy was designed to serve. Decide in advance what evidence would answer whether the activity contributed to that objective, and distinguish activity counts from the business result you actually seek. The available sources do not establish a current cross-platform benchmark or a universal return-on-investment figure; avoid treating either as a reliable standard without a well-sourced, clearly defined comparison.

What should businesses know about advertising and creator disclosures?
Rules depend on jurisdiction. The examples below cover U.S. Federal Trade Commission guidance and UK Competition and Markets Authority guidance; they are not a single global legal rule.
United States: truthful claims and clear material-connection disclosures
The FTC says advertising claims must be truthful, not deceptive or unfair, and evidence-based. Its Advertising and Marketing guidance provides the official U.S. overview.

An endorsement may need a disclosure when the creator has a financial, employment, personal, or family relationship with a brand, including receiving something of value. The FTC’s November 2019 handout, Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers, advises placing a clear disclosure with the endorsement where people can notice it—not where they must click to find it. For video, it advises putting the disclosure in the video rather than only in its description, and cautions that a platform disclosure tool alone may not be sufficient. The FTC’s staff FAQ notes that the Endorsement Guides were revised in 2023 and explains that context and material relationships matter: Endorsement Guides: What People Are Asking.
United Kingdom: incentives can require disclosure regardless of follower count
The UK CMA’s creator guidance, updated 3 September 2025, covers incentives such as payment, commission, free or discounted products, and applies regardless of follower count. It also covers posts on personal accounts about a creator’s own brand or products. See the CMA guidance for social media endorsements. Businesses and creators working across borders should check the requirements that apply in each relevant jurisdiction.
