The FDA lists separate recalls tied to shrimp processed by Indonesia’s PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati (BMS Foods), each with its own brands, products, dates, and distribution areas. Check the exact package against the FDA’s recall index; if it matches, do not eat, sell, or serve it.
How to check whether your shrimp is recalled
A brand name alone is not enough to identify an affected package. Compare the details printed on your product with the product-specific entry in the FDA’s shrimp recall index or the linked company notice.
- Brand and product description: Confirm that both match, including whether the shrimp is raw or cooked and its packaging size.
- UPC and lot code: Match the codes shown in the notice; similar products from the same brand may not be included.
- Best-by date: Check the package date against the date range in the notice.
- Retailer and location: Confirm the retailer and state listed for that specific product.
The FDA index contains notices from multiple companies and dates, including Southwind Foods brands Sand Bar, Arctic Shores, Best Yet, Great American, and First Street; Beaver Street Fisheries/Great Value; AquaStar products sold under AquaStar and Kroger Mercado names; Lawrence Wholesale/Kroger; Sea Port Products; and Direct Source Seafood products sold as Market 32 and Waterfront Bistro. These names are a guide to entries in the archive, not a complete package-level match. Review the current notice for exact identifiers and any updates.
Which products and areas were covered?
The FDA’s index records separate announcements and updates from August through December 2025. Their scope is product-specific: neither the presence of a brand in the archive nor the phrase “expands nationwide” means every product from that brand, every retailer, or every state was affected.

December 2025: Direct Source Seafood
The FDA-hosted notice says Direct Source Seafood recalled approximately 83,800 bags of frozen raw shrimp. The listed products include one-pound Market 32 bags and two-pound Waterfront Bistro bags, with specified best-by dates in April 2027. The notice reports distribution in Colorado, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Montana, North Dakota, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Wyoming. Earlier 2025 notices
FDA’s index includes Southwind Foods announcements dated August 21 and August 29, with a September 23 update, as well as separate notices involving Beaver Street Fisheries, AquaStar, Lawrence Wholesale, Sea Port Products, and later AquaStar products. Southwind’s initial August notice listed distribution to retailers, distributors, and wholesalers in Alabama, Arizona, California, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Utah, Virginia, and Washington; later entries are separate and may expand the products or scope. The initial Southwind notice is not a substitute for checking later updates in the FDA index.

What to do if you have a matching package
- Do not eat, sell, or serve it. FDA’s current instruction is to check its alert and avoid recalled products.
- Follow the specific company notice. Check whether it directs you to dispose of the shrimp or return it for a refund. Do not assume every recall has identical instructions.
- Keep the package details available. The brand, UPC, lot code, and best-by date help confirm the match and follow the correct company instructions.
FDA gives the same core instruction on its consumer response page: “Consumers should review the existing FDA safety alert for certain frozen shrimp products to determine if they have any recalled products and should not eat, sell, or serve recalled products.”
Why were the products recalled, and does that mean they tested positive?
FDA says the shrimp may have been prepared, packed, or held under insanitary conditions that could have led to exposure to cesium-137 (Cs-137), a man-made radioactive isotope. That recall basis does not establish that every recalled retail package tested positive.

FDA says the shipment that triggered its Cs-137 alert did not enter the U.S. market. The agency also says it has not detected Cs-137 in any product above the current derived intervention level of 1,200 Bq/kg. That statement is not the same as saying no Cs-137 was found, nor does it mean that recalled retail shrimp exceeded that level. FDA explains that a level found in a breaded shrimp sample could be a potential health concern if people were exposed for a long period, together with radiation from environmental and other sources. What is the health concern?
FDA identifies elevated cancer risk as the primary concern from longer-term, repeated low-dose exposure, such as consuming contaminated food or water over time. This describes a hazard from sustained exposure; it is not an estimate of the risk to someone who ate one serving, and the recall information does not establish that a particular person was exposed or harmed.

What changed in 2026?
On October 5, 2026, FDA reported findings from its May 2026 in-country assessment of Indonesia’s import certification program for shrimp and spices. FDA says it designated Indonesia’s Marine and Fisheries Quality Assurance Agency as the certifying entity for shrimp. The program followed detections in August 2025 and the issuance of import controls, and applies to certain shrimp and spice products. It is a regulatory measure, not a guarantee that every product is risk-free. See the FDA assessment update for its stated scope.
