Marriott provided booking and Bonvoy access through a licensing agreement, but Sonder—not Marriott—operated the properties. If you prepaid through a Marriott channel, Marriott’s current guidance is to contact your card issuer to request a refund; the route for other bookings depends on the booking provider.
What happened to Sonder and its Marriott relationship?
Marriott and Sonder entered a licensing relationship in August 2024. It let Sonder stays be marketed through Marriott channels and the Marriott Bonvoy program, while Sonder remained responsible for operating the properties.
The dates are distinct. Marriott’s November 14, 2025 court filing says it ended the license on November 7, after Sonder warned that operations could abruptly cease. Marriott publicly announced the termination on November 9. Sonder announced an immediate wind-down on November 10 and said it expected to pursue Chapter 7 liquidation in the United States and insolvency proceedings in other countries where it operated. Marriott’s account of the warning and its response comes from a court motion, not a judicial finding. Read Marriott’s November 14 court filing; see also Marriott’s termination announcement and Sonder’s wind-down announcement.
In the filing, Marriott said Sonder continued managing its properties and received advance payments, including for stays booked through Marriott channels. Marriott said it did not operate the properties or receive guests’ payments. Those statements describe Marriott’s position in litigation; they do not settle every question about liability or recovery.

Why did the companies’ relationship end?
The companies gave different accounts, and neither should be mistaken for a court’s conclusion. Sonder interim CEO Janice Sears said the company faced severe financial constraints and attributed its difficulties in part to delayed technical integration with Marriott, challenges aligning systems, unexpected integration costs, and a sharp revenue decline associated with Bonvoy participation. Sears said, “We are devastated to reach a point where a liquidation is the only viable path forward.” Sonder’s announcement contains her explanation.
Marriott’s court motion says Sonder warned by November 7 that it could not pay debts as they came due, lacked funds for an orderly wind-down, and expected an abrupt shutdown. Marriott also described emergency measures it said it activated for guests. These are claims made by Marriott in its filing, rather than findings by the bankruptcy court.

What did the shutdown mean for guests?
Contemporaneous news reports described guests being told to leave with little notice. CBS News reported a guest returning to find belongings packed and left in a hallway. The Points Guy reported on a Toronto property where a landlord’s warrant was delivered after alleged rent nonpayment. Fast Company also covered guests’ disruption. These accounts show the range of reported experiences; they do not establish that every guest was displaced or treated the same way. CBS News, Fast Company, and The Points Guy reported on the fallout.
Marriott’s November 14 filing said Sonder had operated approximately 7,500 furnished apartments and hotel rooms across 37 cities and nine countries before the bankruptcy, and served approximately 500,000 guests annually. A separate Hotel Dive report said a Marriott spokesperson put the figure at approximately 7,700 Sonder rooms in 140 Marriott-system properties as of September 30, 2025. These figures have different dates and scopes; neither is a count of guests forced to leave. The reviewed reporting does not establish a finalized total of displaced guests. Hotel Dive’s November 2025 report gives the latter figure.

If you booked through another provider
Contact the booking channel you used, such as the travel site or agency, for instructions on the room charge. Keep the reservation confirmation, payment records, cancellation or eviction notice, and any messages from the property or provider.
If you need replacement lodging
For near-term stays canceled by the shutdown, Marriott says its customer-care team can work with guests to find alternative accommodations. Confirm any replacement booking directly and keep the receipts. Do not assume the original booking channel will automatically cover a new stay or the difference in price.

If you incurred other nonrefundable trip expenses
Keep itemized receipts for extra transport, replacement lodging, or other costs, then read the exact travel-insurance policy for language about a travel provider’s insolvency. The Points Guy recommends checking that policy wording, but coverage depends on the contract and circumstances; neither insurance payment nor reimbursement of every added expense is assured. The Points Guy’s report discusses documentation and policy review.
Does the current Sonder website mean the hotel operator is back?
No. The current Sonder.com investor-information page says TravelAI acquired the Sonder word mark, related trademarks, and domain portfolio through a court-supervised process approved in Québec on July 6, 2026. It says the acquisition did not include the former operating company’s properties, leases, inventory, staff, or securities. The use of the Sonder name on a current website is therefore not evidence that the former hotel operator has resumed business. Sonder.com’s investor-information page describes the brand transaction.
