What is the Magnetic Laundry System?
The product is described as two magnet balls placed in a washing machine drum with the laundry. It is marketed as a detergent alternative, but that claim is not independent evidence of cleaning performance. The available product review does not establish current availability, price, or a comprehensive independent test of the named product.
It is also important to distinguish magnet balls placed in a washer from a device that magnetically treats water before washing. A study of the latter does not automatically demonstrate that the former produces the same effects.
What does the evidence show?
Institutional review: no advantage over water alone
The European Commission Joint Research Centre’s 2015 review of laundry alternatives says that none of the alternatives it examined delivered a washing effect better than pure water, and notes that this is consistent with findings that included laundry magnets. The report also points out that water itself has substantial cleaning action. That is why a magnet wash must be compared with a water-only wash: clothes becoming cleaner after washing does not, by itself, show that magnets caused extra cleaning. Controlled study: narrow findings from treated water
A 2013 paper by Lipus, Ačko, and Neral compared four sets of 25 laundering runs on white cotton: tap water alone, standard IEC detergent, magnetically treated water without detergent, and magnetically treated water with detergent. Under those defined conditions, the authors reported increased cotton whiteness and changes in mineral fouling after magnetic water treatment. They also reported a slight increase in the reduction of breaking strength, which remained within the study’s stated standard quality requirements. Those results concern a particular magnetic water-treatment setup and white cotton. They do not establish broad stain-removal performance across household soils, fabrics, washing machines, or the Magnetic Laundry System’s two-ball product.

Why the controls and test settings matter
McGill University’s Office for Science and Society argues that a cited laundry-magnet test lacked a water-only control. Without that comparison, the test cannot separate cleaning caused by the magnet from cleaning caused by water and the wash itself. Read McGill’s analysis.
In a separate informal comparison, K&J Magnetics tested stained shirts in stirred containers with warm water, detergent, magnets, and magnets plus detergent. Its author judged the magnet-only results visually similar to water alone, while detergent removed more stains. Because this was not a washing-machine trial and relied on visual assessment, it is illustrative rather than conclusive. Read the comparison.

Can you wash clothes without detergent?
The evidence does not support relying on the Magnetic Laundry System as a general detergent replacement, especially when removing visible stains or washing varied household fabrics and soils. Water can remove some soil on its own, but that effect should not be mistaken for proof that magnets add cleaning power.
The Joint Research Centre report says its reviewed tests found that lightly soiled laundry may be adequately washed at 30 °C with a reduced detergent amount, such as 50 percent. This is a qualified finding about lightly soiled items under some tested conditions—not a guarantee for every load or machine. Consult the report for its discussion of reduced detergent use.

Is the Magnetic Laundry System a way to save money?
No reliable product-level calculation establishes savings from buying or using this system. The available sources do not verify its current price, ongoing costs, or any detergent reduction attributable to the product. They also do not establish a quantified environmental benefit. Without evidence that it safely replaces a known amount of detergent while delivering comparable cleaning, a savings claim would be speculative.
