Oobah Butler created an Amazon listing for “Release Energy,” a supposed drink made from urine collected in connection with his investigation of Amazon delivery workers. The listing reportedly appeared in beverage categories, but Futurism’s account says the urine was not shipped to buyers. It was a prank and protest stunt, not a verified consumer product.
What was “Release Energy”?
Documentarian and prankster Oobah Butler created the listing as part of a stunt about Amazon’s marketplace and the working conditions of delivery drivers. In a statement reproduced by Futurism’s Oct. 20, 2023 report, Butler said he wanted to see whether the marketplace would let him list bottles of drivers’ urine as an energy drink. He added that he “couldn’t have predicted how easy it would be.”
The word “sold” in coverage of the stunt can be misleading: the report says nobody was shipped the bottled urine. The available account documents a listing and its movement through categories, not customers receiving or consuming a beverage.
How did the listing move through Amazon?
Futurism reported that the listing first appeared under refillable pump dispensers. Amazon’s sales algorithm later placed it in energy drinks. Butler then sought a bitter lemon beverage category and, while posing as a frustrated small-business owner in a contact with Amazon, succeeded in getting it moved there.

The report also describes reviews from Butler’s friends followed by reviews from people who appeared to understand the joke; Amazon restricted reviews to verified testimonials in the episode. These are details of one reported stunt, not evidence that Amazon categorizes products or handles reviews this way in every case.
What worker conditions was the stunt about?
Butler’s investigation drew on interviews with delivery drivers about work pressure and urinating in bottles. Futurism says he heard accounts from drivers in the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Spain who did so while trying to meet performance metrics. The report gives no prevalence estimate, and the interviews do not establish how common the practice is among delivery workers.

Futurism quoted an unnamed Los Angeles-based driver describing the pressure: “I only do this because I have no other options,” and “Other people who go slower just end up getting fired.” The same driver called the experience “honestly degrading.” These are one driver’s remarks as quoted by Futurism, not a population-wide finding.

The stunt combined two distinct issues: how a marketplace listing was categorized and the worker experiences Butler said motivated his protest. The reported category changes and review sequence describe this particular listing; they do not, on their own, establish a general failure in Amazon’s controls. Likewise, the interviews draw attention to reported working conditions but cannot show how widespread bottle urination is.
