Yield Giving announced $640 million in grants to 361 nonprofits on March 19, 2024, after an open call that drew 6,353 applicants. The awards—either $1 million or $2 million each—far exceeded the original plan to distribute $250 million to 250 organizations.
What did Yield Giving announce?
Yield Giving, the philanthropic organization associated with MacKenzie Scott, said 361 nonprofits would receive a total of $640 million through its first Open Call. The grants supported work with people and in places experiencing significant need in the United States. The Associated Press reported the announcement on March 19, 2024.
The scale was substantially larger than the call’s initial target. The comparison below reflects the initial plan and final announcement as reported by the AP:
| Measure | Initial plan | Announced result |
|---|---|---|
| Total funding | $250 million | $640 million |
| Number of organizations | 250 | 361 |
How much did each nonprofit receive?
Reported awards were $1 million or $2 million per organization; they were not all equal. The cited announcement coverage does not establish which amount went to each of the 361 recipients, so an individual grant amount should not be inferred from the aggregate total.

Who could apply, and what work was the call meant to support?
The AP reported that eligible nonprofits had annual budgets between $1 million and $5 million. The call focused on community-led organizations working to advance opportunities for individuals and families with limited means, and for groups facing discrimination and systemic obstacles. These criteria describe the reported applicant profile, not a complete account of every selection consideration.
How did the open-call review work?
- Nonprofits submitted proposals. The AP reported 6,353 applicants.
- Applicants evaluated fellow applicants. In the peer-review stage, applicants scored other applicants.
- Outside experts reviewed top organizations. A panel of outside experts assessed organizations that advanced from the peer stage.
Lever for Change managed the call. Its 2025 Impact Report describes more than 6,300 proposals and says the 361 funded organizations were all new to the funder. The available accounts describe the stages, but do not provide a complete scoring formula or establish that selection was randomized.

Why was the open call notable?
The application-based process offered a different route into Scott’s grantmaking. The AP reported that before this initiative, Scott and her team generally researched and selected organizations without an application process. The Open Call therefore enabled nonprofits to put themselves forward rather than relying solely on funder-initiated identification.
Scott’s contemporaneous statement, reported by the Chronicle of Philanthropy, credited peer organizations and the outside panel with elevating the selected groups: “Each of these 361 community-led non-profits was elevated by peer organizations and a round-2 evaluation panel for their outstanding work advancing the voices and opportunities of individuals and families of meager or modest means, and groups who have met with discrimination and other systemic obstacles.”

What the announcement does—and does not—show
The announcement establishes the total commitment, number of recipients, two award levels, applicant count, broad eligibility profile and review stages. It does not, in the cited coverage, verify a complete recipient-by-recipient award breakdown or provide evidence of the grants’ later impact. The 2025 Lever for Change report adds a retrospective application count and says the funded organizations were new to the funder, but it does not turn the selection description into a full rubric or an impact evaluation.
