MacKenzie Scott announced on December 15, 2020, that she had given $4,158,500,000 to 384 organizations over four months. The gifts reached all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and Washington, D.C. In her announcement, she described the pandemic as “a wrecking ball in the lives of Americans already struggling.”

How much did MacKenzie Scott give?

The exact total in Scott’s December 15, 2020 announcement was $4,158,500,000. The gifts were made over the preceding four months, according to her essay, “384 Ways to Help”. The $4 billion figure in the headline is a rounded shorthand for that total; contemporaneous coverage also described it as about $4.2 billion.

How many organizations received gifts?

Scott said the gifts went to 384 organizations across all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and Washington, D.C. The announcement reports an aggregate amount and recipient count, not a uniform award: it does not establish that each organization received the same amount. The reviewed announcement also does not provide a complete grant-by-grant allocation for all 384 recipients.

Reuters reported that recipients included food banks and emergency relief funds, examples of organizations addressing immediate needs during the crisis. Those examples do not describe the full recipient group.

What did Scott mean by “wrecking ball”?

Scott used the phrase to describe the pandemic’s effect on people who were already struggling. In the announcement, she wrote: “This pandemic has been a wrecking ball in the lives of Americans already struggling.” She also said she had asked a team of advisers to help accelerate her 2020 giving “through immediate support to people suffering the economic effects of the crisis.”

How did the December gifts compare with her earlier 2020 announcement?

The December announcement followed Scott’s July 2020 announcement of $1.7 billion in gifts to 116 organizations. These are separate announcements with different totals and recipient counts:

Announcement Amount Organizations
July 2020 $1.7 billion 116
December 15, 2020 $4,158,500,000 384

The July figures are from Scott’s 2020 announcement; the December figures are from her Yield Giving essay.

Which organizations received the donations?

Scott’s December announcement identifies the total number and geographic reach, but the material cited here does not establish a complete list with amounts for all 384 recipients. It would therefore be misleading to infer an individual organization’s grant from the aggregate total or to treat the food banks and emergency funds mentioned in Reuters’ report as a full list.
