How to Create Digital Products and Sell Them

To create a digital product with a realistic chance of selling, start with a specific audience problem, choose a format that solves it, and make the path from purchase to delivery straightforward. A product can be a downloadable file or paid access to digital content or a service. No format or platform guarantees sales: demand, quality, pricing, reach, and execution all matter.

What digital products can you sell?

Digital products include downloadable files and digitally delivered access. Examples include ebooks, PDFs, templates, spreadsheets, digital art, audio, video, online services, courses, memberships, paid newsletters, and access to hosted content. Shopify describes downloadable goods and online services; Kit lists items such as ebooks, courses, templates, presets, music, paid newsletters, and link access (Shopify Help Center; Kit Help Center).

The right format depends on what the buyer needs to do. A reusable spreadsheet may suit a repeated planning task; a guide can explain a process; a course or membership may fit material that benefits from lessons, updates, or ongoing access. These are format choices, not evidence that one category sells better than another.

How do you create a digital product people will pay for?

1. Define the audience and the problem

Describe the intended buyer narrowly enough to identify a practical need. Write down the task they are trying to complete, what makes it difficult, and what a useful result would look like. Avoid starting with a format—such as “I should make an ebook”—before you know whose problem it addresses.

2. Choose the smallest useful offer

Match the scope to the problem. If a focused template or guide can help, it may be more manageable than building a large course. Teachable describes smaller downloads as a possible way to explore interest before developing a full course, or to bundle with courses, coaching, or memberships. That is a platform-described use case, not independent proof that a download validates demand or increases sales (Teachable).

3. Build and check the deliverable

Create the file or digital experience, then check it as a buyer would: confirm links work, instructions are clear, files open on expected devices, and the promised content is included. For a hosted product, make sure buyers can access it after checkout. Keep the product description accurate about format, scope, and any prerequisites.

4. Set a price and delivery method

Choose a price in the context of the product’s scope, the audience, and the costs of selling it. There is no universal price established by the platform sources here. Check how checkout handles currency, taxes, refunds, and delivery; the seller remains responsible for understanding obligations that apply in their location.

5. Publish and make it discoverable

Create a product page or checkout link with a plain-language explanation of who the product is for, what it includes, and how the buyer receives it. Then direct relevant people to it through the channel you already use, such as an email list, a creator page, or your store. A successful checkout setup only makes a sale possible; it does not establish demand or guarantee sales.

Where should you sell your digital product?

Choose a selling surface based on the product format, how buyers will find it, delivery needs, fees, audience, and tax handling. The platform pages below describe vendor features and charges; they are not independent comparisons or evidence of creator outcomes.

Platform Documented fit Costs and conditions to check
Shopify Digital goods can be sold alongside physical products. Shopify cites digital art, video, audio, and online services; goods may be available immediately after purchase. Shopify says there are no additional fees for digital goods on its online store. This does not mean there are no store-plan, payment, or other operating costs. See Shopify’s digital products documentation.
Kit Commerce Supports digital goods including ebooks, courses, templates, presets, music, paid newsletters, and link access. Sellers can share products through a broadcast, form, landing page, or direct link. Kit’s September 3, 2026 documentation lists a 3.5% + $0.30 charge per USD transaction and no monthly Commerce fee. Stripe is required. Seller country eligibility is limited to the countries listed by Kit; supported currencies are USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD, and NZD. Kit says it collects VAT only, not US sales tax or Canada QST. Check the live terms and your own tax obligations at Kit Help Center.
Teachable Supports downloads such as PDFs, audio, spreadsheets, templates, and guides, and can bundle them with courses, memberships, or coaching. Its current product page lists plans starting at $29/month after a seven-day trial. Confirm which plan features you need and the current price at Teachable.
Patreon Supports one-time purchases of digital products, posts, and collections. Buyers can access purchases without becoming members. Patreon’s standard platform fee for applicable creators is 10% of successfully processed sales, plus processing fees that vary; its example is 2.9% + $0.30 USD. Taxes and payout fees may also apply, and legacy creators may have different platform fees. See Patreon’s shop documentation and fee overview.

For an email-led workflow, Kit’s documented setup is to connect payments, create a product with its price, currency, and delivery method, then share it. Teachable describes entering product information, uploading or linking a file, and publishing. Shopify may suit sellers already running a store, while Patreon is oriented toward creators selling to a fan community. Compare the current terms directly before committing, since features, fees, and eligibility can change.

How much does it cost to sell digital products?

There is no single cost. Depending on the platform, possible charges include a recurring plan, a platform percentage, payment processing, and applicable tax or payout fees. The figures below are platform-published terms, not a complete estimate of every seller’s costs:

  • Shopify: says there is no additional fee for digital products sold through its online store; other store and payment costs are separate.
  • Kit: lists 3.5% + $0.30 per USD transaction and no monthly Commerce fee in its September 3, 2026 article. Stripe and eligible seller-country status are required.
  • Teachable: lists a starting plan price of $29 per month after a seven-day trial on its current product page.
  • Patreon: lists a standard 10% platform fee for applicable creators, plus processing fees; legacy creators may have different platform rates.

Before choosing, calculate the charges on a sale at your intended price and check whether a monthly plan is worthwhile at your expected sales volume. Also confirm tax collection and reporting responsibilities: a platform’s stated tax handling does not establish that it covers every tax a seller may owe.

What makes a digital product sell successfully?

Success is not established by choosing a popular format or turning on checkout. The platform documentation explains publishing tools and fees, but does not show that any product type or launch method reliably produces sales. Build around a real audience need, make the offer easy to understand, ensure delivery works, and choose a channel that can reach likely buyers. Treat sales as an outcome to measure rather than a guaranteed result or passive income.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
