What happened in Bellevue?
On October 16, 2023, GeekWire reported that a Washington state WARN filing listed 165 Flexport employees affected in the Seattle-area office. The report connected the filing to the company’s broader October workforce reduction. The figure is a local count reported from the filing, not a confirmed global layoff total.
Washington’s Employment Security Department explains that its WARN database includes employer and location, effective date, affected-worker count, layoff or closure type, notice-received date, and a downloadable notice. The department says entries are displayed by notice-received date. GeekWire’s account is the available source for the Flexport figure; the underlying notice itself was not directly reviewed for this account.
How did the Bellevue notice relate to the global cuts?
On October 12, 2023, Flexport CEO Ryan Petersen announced that the company would reduce its global team by approximately 20%, with the process beginning October 13. In his employee note, Petersen described the change as a difficult decision and said Flexport aimed to return to profitability without raising prices or putting its balance sheet at risk. Those were the company’s stated goals at the time, not independently verified outcomes.

The approximately 20% figure was a company-wide percentage, while 165 was the reported count for the Seattle-area office. Flexport did not disclose a confirmed global employee count in the GeekWire report, so the local figure should not be used to calculate the worldwide total. GeekWire relayed an outside headcount estimate, but it was not a company-confirmed figure.
Why were employees affected?
Flexport framed the October action as a restructuring intended to position the company to return to profitability. Petersen said in his October 12 note that Flexport had more than $1 billion in net cash and expected the changes to put it in a position to take advantage of opportunities and return to profitability as soon as the end of the following year. Both the cash and profitability outlook were statements Petersen made in 2023, not current financial facts or proof that the target was achieved.

In a statement to GeekWire, a Flexport spokesperson said the restructuring philosophy was to create an organizational structure that served customers and enabled the company to move quickly. These explanations describe management’s rationale; they do not establish the later financial or operational results of the cuts.
How the October layoffs differed from Flexport’s January 2023 cuts
Flexport had announced another workforce reduction earlier in 2023. The January and October rounds were separate actions, each described by the company as affecting approximately 20% of its global workforce or team.

No office closure was announced in the October 2023 reporting. GeekWire reported that Flexport said it would maintain its Bellevue office and described the location as one of its main technology and product development hubs. That was the company’s statement in October 2023; it does not establish the office’s current status.
