Before relying on a number, check whether it comes from employer notices, a government estimate, or a third-party database, and follow consequential records back to their original source.
What a layoff tracker shows
Layoff trackers organize information about workforce reductions so readers can search by employer, location, date, or reported number of affected workers. The records and tools vary by provider. Some trackers collect public Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filings; others combine public records into a historical dataset.
A tracker’s total reflects the records it has collected and how it has standardized them. It should not be treated as a complete national count unless that coverage has been established. A WARN notice is also a report of a planned reduction: filings may later be amended, so a displayed figure can change.
How to track U.S. layoffs
Search a WARN notice tracker
LayoffTracker.us says it organizes public WARN Act filings from state Departments of Labor, cleans and standardizes the records, and lets visitors browse by year or company. Its dashboard displayed 3,750 WARN notices and 345,560 workers affected in 2026 so far, as of October 8, 2026. These are the provider’s changing dashboard figures, not a government-certified national total; the site notes that filings may be amended.

Look for the original record
When a notice matters to a personal or financial decision, use the tracker to find the relevant employer and location, then verify the entry against the underlying state filing. Check which date the record uses and whether it reflects a planned effective date or a filing date; conventions may vary.
Use government statistics for a different question
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) measures layoffs and discharges as part of monthly employer separations statistics. Its August 2026 release reported 1.829 million layoffs and discharges in the United States for that month, preliminary and not seasonally adjusted. That estimate is not a count of WARN notices, so it should not be compared directly with a tracker’s notice total. See the BLS JOLTS release.

Why WARN counts and BLS figures differ
WARN trackers and BLS statistics describe different data. A notice tracker aggregates filings about planned workforce reductions. JOLTS reports a statistical measure of monthly layoffs and discharges. One is not a substitute for the other, and a difference between their totals does not by itself mean either is incorrect.
The BLS Mass Layoff Statistics (MLS) program used another definition: establishments with at least 50 initial unemployment-insurance claims in a five-week period. Its extended series covered a subset with at least 50 workers separated for 31 or more days. The BLS currently lists the MLS program as eliminated, so it should not be presented as a current, comprehensive WARN tracker. Read the BLS MLS program information.

How to compare layoff trackers
A larger database is not automatically a more reliable one. Compare what each provider discloses about its records and how you can verify them.
- Sources and geography: Does the provider name the records it collects and state its geographic coverage?
- Original filings: Can you open or identify the state record behind an entry?
- Dates and updates: Does the tracker explain its date conventions and how often it updates?
- Record detail: Can you see the employer, location, affected-worker count, and relevant timing?
- Amendments and duplicates: Does the provider explain how it handles revised notices or duplicate records?
- Search, history, and export: Can you filter by company, state, or year, and is the historical data exportable or paid?
WARNTracker describes charts spanning 1988–2026 and a dataset of more than 60,000 events, with state and time analysis. Those scale and coverage details are the provider’s claims, not independently verified proof of completeness. Its page also lists paid access to a full historical dataset, future WARN notice data, company-specific job-title breakdowns, and employee profiles; the page does not establish pricing or verify an affiliate program. How to use a tracker for a consequential decision
- Use a tracker to locate reports, not as the sole basis for a conclusion about a company or the scale of a layoff.
- Check the employer, location, date, and affected-worker figure in the record. Treat the count as reported, not necessarily final.
- Follow the entry to its state filing when available. For a national monthly estimate, consult the relevant BLS release instead of treating notice totals as equivalent.
- Do not assume a notice establishes an individual worker’s eligibility, timing, or legal rights. Rules and circumstances can vary; consult the relevant official filing or qualified adviser for a specific case.
