It sold its customer list to Turo in July, but that sale does not mean Turo took over Kyte reservations or refund obligations.
When did Kyte shut down?
TechCrunch reported Kyte’s shutdown on August 15, 2025. The company had been founded in 2019 and built a service that delivered rental cars to customers’ homes. It expanded to 14 markets and raised more than $300 million in financing over its lifetime, according to TechCrunch; these figures are reported by the publication, not presented as audited financial statements.
Kyte described itself as the “best competitor to Hertz,” a phrase reflecting its own positioning rather than an objective ranking. Unlike peer-to-peer services such as Turo, Kyte controlled its own fleet.
Why did Kyte close?
The reported sequence combined operating and financing problems. Kyte fell behind on some loans, and its top lender repossessed and liquidated the vehicle fleet. The board pursued financing options but could not secure funding, then voted to wind down the company, according to TechCrunch’s account of a notice sent to creditors.

Financial strain preceded the shutdown
In 2024, CEO Nikolaus Volk told TechCrunch that Kyte was struggling to generate free cash flow in Atlanta, Chicago, Boston and Washington, D.C. The company explored a sale, then chose to restructure and concentrate on profitability in San Francisco and New York City. That retrenchment did not prevent the later wind-down.
Did Turo buy Kyte?
Kyte sold its customer list to Turo in July 2025, according to TechCrunch. That is not the same as Turo buying the company or assuming its rental reservations, debts or refund obligations. The reported customer-list sale alone does not establish that Turo is responsible for a Kyte booking or payment dispute.

What can customers with prepaid Kyte reservations do?
TechCrunch reported that some customers who had prepaid for trips were still waiting for refunds after the closure. Experiences with card-company chargebacks varied: some customers interviewed by the publication said they obtained one, while others had not. Volk told TechCrunch in a message that a chargeback might be the quickest way to recover money, but neither that suggestion nor the reported experiences guarantee an outcome.
- Gather your records. Keep the booking confirmation, payment receipt, cancellation or refund messages, and any correspondence with Kyte.
- Ask your card issuer about a dispute. Explain that the rental service shut down and describe the payment and refund status. Ask about the issuer’s process and deadlines; eligibility and results depend on the issuer and the facts of the transaction.
- Keep track of the claim. Save the issuer’s case number and any documents it requests. The reporting does not establish the status or outcome of any individual customer’s claim.
TechCrunch’s report does not establish a universal refund process, a guaranteed chargeback remedy, or a current resolution for every prepaid booking.

What Kyte’s collapse means when choosing another rental
Kyte’s service combined a company-controlled fleet with home delivery. Alternatives may operate differently: a peer-to-peer marketplace connects renters with vehicle owners, while a traditional rental company generally operates its own fleet. Before booking elsewhere, compare how you receive the car, whether service is available where you need it, the reservation and cancellation terms, and how payment disputes are handled. Kyte’s shutdown reporting does not establish current prices, coverage or terms for other providers.
