Live esports betting—also called in-play or in-running betting—is wagering while a match is underway. Odds and available markets can change as the game unfolds, and a viewer watching a delayed stream may be behind the people or data feeds informing those changes. Whether betting is legal depends on where you are, so check local rules and licensing before using any service.

How live esports betting works

The UK Gambling Commission defines in-play betting as betting while an event is taking place. It says betting on esports should be treated no differently from betting on another live event under its guidance. That describes the regulatory approach in the UK; it is not a global rule.

During a match, operators may use real-time event information to revise odds, suspend a market, or settle a wager. Prices can move continuously as the match state and the operator’s liabilities change. A market being available at one moment does not mean it will remain open: suspension can occur while an event is developing or information is being checked.

A live market might concern the eventual match result or an outcome within the match, but the exact markets, settlement terms, and availability depend on the operator and jurisdiction. The sources available here do not establish terms for any particular service.

HyperX Cloud III – Wired Gaming Headset, PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Angled 53mm Drivers, Spatial Audio, Memory Foam, Durable Frame, Ultra-Clear 10mm Mic, USB-C, USB-A, 3.5mm – Black/Red
  • Comfort is King: Comfort’s in the Cloud III’s DNA. Built for gamers who can’t have an uncomfortable headset ruin the flow of their full-combo, disrupt their speedrun, or knocking them out of the zone.
  • Audio Tuned for Your Entertainment: Angled 53mm drivers have been tuned by HyperX audio engineers to provide the optimal listening experience that accents the dynamic sounds of gaming.
  • Upgraded Microphone for Clarity and Accuracy: Captures high-quality audio for clear voice chat and calls. The mic is noise-cancelling and features a built-in mesh filter to omit disruptive sounds and LED mic mute indicator lets you know when you’re muted.
  • Durability, for the Toughest of Battles: The headset is flexible and features an aluminum frame so it’s resilient against travel, accidents, mishaps, and your ‘level-headed’ reactions to losses and defeat screens.

Why stream delay matters

Live action and a viewer’s screen may not be synchronized. A person at a venue, or a participant receiving a faster data feed, can learn about an event before someone watching a broadcast or stream. If odds update using the earlier information, the viewer may be making a decision with a less current picture of the match.

The UK Gambling Commission’s Remote Technical Standard RTS 15 says customers should be made aware that they may not have the latest information when betting on live events and may be disadvantaged against operators or other customers with more up-to-date information. A visible stream is therefore not proof that a viewer has the same information or timing as everyone involved in a market.

The Commission describes “courtsiding” as using or transmitting information from a live event for gambling in a way that exploits a delay between the live action and a TV or other feed. It says this may breach event-entry terms, while its interpretation is that courtsiding is not cheating under section 42 of the UK Gambling Act 2005. That is a specific UK regulator’s interpretation, not a statement of law everywhere.

Integrity risks are real, but one case does not establish prevalence

In an 8 October 2024 ruling concerning a League of Legends Circuit Oceania match, Riot Games described suspicious betting activity that aligned with unusual player performance. It found that a player had deliberately underperformed for betting purposes and imposed a 36-month ban. This documented case shows why live-market integrity controls matter; it does not show how common match-fixing is across esports.

The World Lottery Association’s WLA-SCS:2024 standard calls for documented procedures covering live-bet integrity, results handling, customer protection, time delays, results sources, reversal of results, and measures to prevent courtsiding, such as delaying live pictures. It also calls for monitoring odds changes, blocked markets, events, customer transactions, and irregularities. This is an industry standard, not a replacement for local law or an operator’s license conditions.

Legality depends on location

There is no single global answer to whether live esports betting is legal. Rules can differ by country and subnational jurisdiction, and the examples below should not be generalized beyond their stated scope.

Location What the cited authority says Scope and qualification
United Kingdom The UK Gambling Commission says esports should be treated no differently from other live events for betting regulation. This is UK sector guidance; it does not confirm that a particular service or market is licensed or available.
Australia The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) says online in-play sports betting is prohibited under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001. This statement concerns online in-play sports betting. It is not a worldwide rule, and readers should verify how current local law applies to esports in their circumstances.
New South Wales, Australia Liquor & Gaming NSW says it is an offence to publish advertising relating to a sporting event in progress, including live odds and in-play betting services. This is an advertising rule for NSW, not a rule for every Australian state or country.

ACMA reported that Tabcorp paid a $158,400 penalty after accepting 426 in-play bets across 32 tennis matches from February 2024 through June 2025. The enforcement example concerns tennis, not esports, and should not be treated as a measure of esports betting or market prevalence.

Before acting, check the rules for your location and confirm through the relevant regulator that a provider is licensed there. A service’s availability online does not by itself establish that it may lawfully offer betting to you.

What to check before using a live-betting service

If you are assessing a service, verify the details that determine both legality and the practical terms of a wager. Do not assume that a market, protection, or help option is available just because another operator offers it.

  • Local authorization: Check the provider’s license status with your jurisdiction’s regulator and confirm that esports and live markets are allowed where you are.
  • Market rules: Read how markets can be suspended, how results are sourced, how wagers are settled, and whether results can be reversed.
  • Timing: Consider that a stream may lag behind the match or faster feeds. A broadcast delay cannot be assumed to match an operator’s data timing.
  • Account controls: Check age and identity requirements, deposit or time limits, self-exclusion options, and the routes for complaints and support.

Live betting and financial risk

Rapidly changing markets can make it easy to place repeated wagers or act on impulse. Liquor & Gaming NSW says its restrictions on advertising in-play betting services are intended to address concerns that such ads may encourage continuous or impulsive betting. That statement is specific to NSW advertising rules.

The UK Gambling Commission says licensed operators must maintain policies to identify customers at risk of harm, interact with customers they suspect may be at risk, and make responsible-gambling information and help available. It also notes that cash-out offers connected to live markets can be volatile, particularly late in an event. A cash-out offer is an operator’s changing offer, not a guaranteed way to preserve a particular return.

Set limits before betting, do not treat a wager as income or a way to recover losses, and use local support services if gambling is causing financial or personal harm.
