For signings, FootballTransfers ranks Sindre Walle Egeli’s 2025 move to Ipswich at €20 million first, with Ruben Neves’s move to Wolves at €17.9 million among the leading reported fees. Sales are a separate category: The Football Group, for example, lists Southampton’s sale of Roméo Lavia to Chelsea at £58 million. Those rankings cannot be combined into one meaningful top 15 without a consistent definition and comparable fee data.
What counts as one of the biggest Championship deals?
A club’s incoming signing and its outgoing sale answer different questions. A list of the largest fees paid by Championship clubs should include purchases such as Wolves’ signing of Neves; a list of the largest fees received should include sales such as Southampton’s deal for Lavia. Mixing both can make an outgoing fee look like a record signing, or vice versa.
The available rankings report selected transactions, not a reconciled, complete top 15 for this exact title. They also do not establish a uniform method for add-ons, loan-to-permanent structures, or inflation adjustment. Treat the amounts below as figures reported by the named sources, not as independently verified or directly comparable totals.

FootballTransfers’ signing list includes these leading reported fees. The figures are nominal and retain the source’s currency; the ranking does not establish how add-ons were treated.

| Rank in FootballTransfers list | Player and move | Year | Reported fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sindre Walle Egeli, Nordsjaelland to Ipswich | 2025 | €20 million |
| 2 | Mike Tresor, Genk to Burnley (permanent move) | 2024 | €18 million |
| 3 | Ruben Neves, Porto to Wolves | 2017 | €17.9 million |
| 4 | Britt Assombalonga, Nottingham Forest to Middlesbrough | 2017 | €17.1 million |
These positions and amounts are FootballTransfers’ reporting, not a definitive all-time record confirmed across transfer databases. In particular, a club’s league status at the time of a transfer and the source’s definition of “Championship signing” matter when comparing lists.
Why Ruben Neves is the Jorge Mendes connection
FootballTransfers describes Jorge Mendes as spearheading Wolves’ Portuguese revolution and places Neves’s 2017 arrival in that recruitment story. It reports a €17.9 million fee and says Neves helped Wolves secure promotion in 2018. This supports a link between Mendes and Wolves’ broader recruitment approach; it does not establish that Mendes personally handled every transaction in that period.

What could make Nottingham Forest’s “shocker”?
João Carvalho: an expensive Forest signing
João Carvalho’s 2018 move from Benfica to Nottingham Forest is a plausible interpretation of the headline’s Forest reference. Squawka reports a £13.2 million fee; FootballTransfers lists €15 million for the same transfer. Those are separate source reports in different currencies, not figures that can be added or averaged into a single confirmed fee. Squawka also reports that Carvalho had made 61 Championship appearances, scoring five goals and providing nine assists, at the time of its article.
Britt Assombalonga: a major Forest sale
There is another Forest deal in the signing ranking: Assombalonga’s 2017 transfer to Middlesbrough, listed by FootballTransfers at €17.1 million. It was an outgoing sale by Forest, not a fee Forest paid to sign a player. That distinction changes whether the transfer belongs in a list of biggest Championship signings or biggest sales.

Why a sales record is not a signing record
The Football Group’s January 30, 2025 article ranks major sales by clubs that had been in the Championship and lists Roméo Lavia’s move from Southampton to Chelsea at £58 million. This is a reported figure in a separate sales category; it should not be compared as if Southampton had paid that amount to sign Lavia as a Championship club. The category and club context are essential to interpreting any headline figure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the figures do—and do not—establish
- They identify reported examples, not a verified top 15. The available purchase ranking supplies four leading entries, while the separate sales source provides a different kind of list.
- Currency differences remain unresolved. Carvalho’s transfer is reported as £13.2 million by Squawka and €15 million by FootballTransfers; neither figure should be silently converted into, or substituted for, the other.
- The fee methodology is not uniform in the available reporting. Add-ons, loan arrangements, and whether amounts are guaranteed are not consistently established.
- Current-period agent disclosures do not prove a past representation claim. The FA’s 2025–26 transaction disclosure covers February 4, 2025 to February 2, 2026, so it does not verify who represented Carvalho in 2018.
For those reasons, the sourced evidence supports a careful account of notable reported deals—not a confident claim that these are precisely the 15 biggest transactions in Championship history.
