David Gilmour’s “Black Strat” sold for $14,550,000 at Christie’s Jim Irsay Collection: Hall of Fame sale in New York on March 12, 2026, setting a new guitar auction record, according to Christie’s. The auction house says that figure includes the buyer’s premium.
What guitar holds the auction record?
The record-setting instrument was David Gilmour’s Black Strat, a Stratocaster associated with the Pink Floyd guitarist. Christie’s reported that bidding lasted 21 minutes before the guitar sold for $14,550,000, including buyer’s premium. The result is listed in the auction house’s Hall of Fame sale results.
Christie’s guitars department page rounds the result to $14.5 million; the more precise figure in the Hall of Fame release is $14,550,000. For a sale-price comparison, use the precise result and note that it includes the buyer’s premium rather than treating it as the seller’s proceeds.
How much did the Jim Irsay guitar auction make?
Christie’s reported two different totals, each covering a different scope. They should not be added together or used interchangeably.

| Reported figure | What it covers | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| $84,091,350 | The Jim Irsay Collection: Hall of Fame sale | Christie’s reported this total in its Hall of Fame results release. |
| $94,484,903 | The broader Jim Irsay Collection sale series | Christie’s reported this series-wide total, along with 28 world records, in its collection results release. |
The broader series covered music and other cultural categories, not just guitars; Christie’s described the planned 2026 sales in its overview of the Jim Irsay Collection. The series total therefore is not a guitar-auction total.
Other headline guitar results
Christie’s also highlighted Jerry Garcia’s Tiger and Kurt Cobain’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” guitar among the notable results. In its collection-wide release, the auction house gave rounded figures of $11.6 million for the Tiger and $6.9 million for Cobain’s guitar. These are rounded reported figures; the release does not establish the same premium treatment for those amounts as the Hall of Fame release does for the Black Strat’s exact result. Avoid treating them as directly comparable precise sale prices.

What the record does—and does not—say about guitar values
The Black Strat result establishes a record for a guitar sold at auction as reported by Christie’s. It does not, by itself, show that guitar values generally have risen or explain why this particular instrument achieved its price. The cited Christie’s releases describe the auction outcomes but do not provide an independent audit of proceeds or a market-wide analysis.
For personal-finance purposes, the result is best understood as an exceptional sale of a specific artist-associated instrument, not a price guide for ordinary guitars or proof of future investment returns. Christie’s identifies the Black Strat as a Stratocaster, but a current-production Stratocaster is a different instrument—not the historic, artist-used, modified guitar sold in this auction.
