Coverage reported 287 job cuts in the Quad Cities, with the reductions expected to take effect January 3, 2025. Deere attributed the cuts to reduced demand for products made at the affected facilities and said they were not related to production moves.
How many workers and which locations were affected?
The October 18, 2024 coverage reported 287 affected workers across Deere operations in Davenport, East Moline and Moline. The figures were relayed by Farm Policy News and Successful Farming from Des Moines Register reporter Kevin Baskins; the two publications carry substantially overlapping reporting, rather than independent confirmations.
| Location and operation | Reported workers |
|---|---|
| Davenport, Iowa | 80 |
| Harvester Works, East Moline, Illinois | 200 |
| Seeding and Cylinder operations, Moline, Illinois | 7 |
| Reported total | 287 |
The coverage gave January 3, 2025, as the effective date for the cuts. Farm Policy News and Successful Farming reported the announcement.
Why did Deere say it was making the cuts?
Deere attributed this round to reduced demand for products made at the affected facilities, a weakening farm economy and fewer customer orders. The statement reproduced in the coverage said: “It is important to note these layoffs are due to reduced demand for the products produced at these facilities. They are not related to production moves.” That is Deere’s stated explanation; the available coverage does not independently establish the cause of each position reduction.

The distinction matters because production moves were a separate concern discussed in the coverage. Deere’s statement addressed this particular round only; it should not be generalized to other layoffs or later announcements.
How does this fit into earlier 2024 cuts?
The October report also said that, beginning in March 2024, Deere had laid off nearly 2,600 operations workers across facilities in Ankeny, Dubuque, Ottumwa, Waterloo, Davenport and East Moline, alongside white-collar reductions. That is a cumulative figure relayed by the article, not an independently verified or necessarily comprehensive count. It should not be added to the 287 figure without confirming the periods and whether the groups overlap.

What was the business context?
The coverage relayed Deere’s third-quarter 2024 results: net sales and revenue of $13.15 billion, down 17% from $15.8 billion a year earlier, and net income down 42% year over year. Those company figures provide business context, but they do not by themselves prove why specific positions were eliminated. The same coverage described broader agricultural-equipment weakness, including lower equipment orders and dealer inventory constraints; those reports likewise do not establish the cause of an individual layoff.

Iowa Workforce Development explains that WARN notices and worker transition services are intended to protect workers, families and communities. The agency describes federal notice requirements of 60 calendar days for covered plant closings or mass layoffs, and Iowa’s state WARN rule as requiring 30 calendar days for covered employers with 25 or more employees. Those general thresholds do not establish whether either rule applied to these specific cuts. The surfaced Iowa WARN log information did not verify the October 2024 Quad Cities counts.
