Blue Origin’s April 2025 flight with Katy Perry was a successful short suborbital mission, but it became a lightning rod for criticism about celebrity spectacle, exclusive access and the value of private spaceflight. Calling it a proven financial or operational “flop” goes beyond what is publicly known: Blue Origin did not disclose the flight’s cost, who paid, or its economics.
What happened on Katy Perry’s Blue Origin flight?
On April 14, 2025, Blue Origin launched six women aboard its New Shepard suborbital rocket from West Texas. The passengers were Katy Perry, Lauren Sánchez, Gayle King, Aisha Bowe, Amanda Nguyen and Kerianne Flynn. They returned safely after a brief flight to the edge of space.
The Associated Press reported an altitude of 66 miles (107 kilometers) and described the trip as about 10 minutes, including a few minutes of weightlessness. The Washington Post reported an 11-minute duration. These are reported mission figures, not evidence of an orbital journey: New Shepard’s flight was suborbital.
It was the first U.S. spaceflight with women in every seat, according to the Associated Press, and the first female-only crew since 1963, according to the Washington Post. The distinction matters: the 2025 mission carried six women, while Valentina Tereshkova’s 1963 flight was a solo mission. At the time of its report, the Associated Press said women represented barely 15% of the more than 700 people who had traveled into space; that is a contemporaneous statistic, not a current tally. Was the flight really a flop?
“Flop” is a defensible description of a public-relations backlash only if it is clearly presented as a judgment. It is not an established financial result or operational outcome. The passengers returned safely, and the available reporting does not show that the mission failed technically, lost money or fell short of a disclosed commercial target.
Critics on social media called the trip a publicity stunt and questioned the value of an exclusive excursion. The Washington Post quoted actor Olivia Munn criticizing its expense and the priorities it seemed to represent. Those reactions establish that the flight drew criticism; they do not measure public opinion as a whole or prove a business failure. Perry, speaking after the flight, framed it differently: “We weren’t just taking up space. We were making space for the future,” the Associated Press reported.

How much did the flight cost, and who paid?
Blue Origin did not disclose the cost of the NS-31 flight or identify who paid for it in the reporting reviewed. There is therefore no reliable basis for calculating the mission’s cost per passenger, comparing its expense with Perry’s wealth or career revenue, or deciding whether it made or lost money.
The Washington Post reported that Blue Origin’s website listed a $150,000 deposit to reserve a seat on an upcoming flight. That was a reservation deposit, not a disclosed final fare and not the cost of the Perry flight. The paper also reported that a seat on Blue Origin’s inaugural 2021 flight sold at auction for $28 million. That was a one-time auction result, not a typical ticket price or a price paid for NS-31. The Washington Post’s report.

Luxury and access are fair subjects for criticism even when the price is unknown. But the undisclosed mission cost and payer make a financial verdict impossible from these figures.
What the flight says about representation and access
NS-31 combined two contrasting ideas: a milestone for an all-women commercial crew and an invitation-only experience unavailable to the public at large. Its historical symbolism does not erase the exclusivity; the exclusivity does not erase the milestone. The flight’s public meaning is broader than any single celebrity passenger because it put both representation and the limits of private access on display.

Blue Origin presents its mission as building a road to space for Earth’s benefit and lists “Radically Reduce the Cost of Access to Space” as an objective. The company says its New Shepard and New Glenn vehicles were designed for reuse. These are the company’s stated ambitions and design claims, not independent evidence that space access has already become cheaper. Jeff Bezos’s “It’s this generation’s job to build a road to space, so that future generations can unleash their creativity” appears on the company’s About page; it is not a statement about NS-31 specifically. Blue Origin’s mission and company page.
The flight’s short duration and elaborate public profile also invite different judgments. For passengers, the experience included a few minutes of weightlessness; for audiences, the event became a story about celebrities, aspiration and inequality. Without disclosed cost and operating data, neither the symbolic value nor the spectacle can be converted into a complete cost-benefit calculation.

- RECOVERY WADDING FOR ROCKET MODEL KIT: Estes rocket model kits require Recovery Wadding for a safe trip back to earth after every launch. This pack of 75 flame-resistant 2274 Recovery Wadding sheets provides enough material for about 18–25 flights, depending on how many sheets your model-rocket type requires.
- MOTOR & PARACHUTE PROTECTION: 2274 Recovery Wadding aids in heat protection during ejection in most Estes rockets. It helps prevent the rocket parachute from absorbing the heat from the motor’s ejection charge and getting melted or singed. This wadding is intended for use by ages 10+ with adult supervision for ages 12 and under.
- LAUNCH NECESSITY: Rocket-building kit accessories make educational Christmas gifts or stocking-stuffer surprises! Whether you’re working with a beginner model-rocket-building kit or an advanced-level replica, this wadding belongs in every rocket recovery kit. Place a few or several sheets (based on the level of rocket motor you're using) between the motor and parachute to protect against ejection heat.
- SAFETY FIRST, FUN ALWAYS: Our rockets and rocket launch accessories are designed to be used with the NAR (National Association of Rocketry) model-rocket safety code. Always ensure you have an appropriate launch site, stand back at least 15 ft., insert the safety key, issue a countdown, and then you can let your rocket fly!

What FAA licensing does—and does not—mean
The Federal Aviation Administration licenses commercial space launches and verifies that vehicles operate as intended, but federal law limits its authority to regulate the safety of people aboard. The FAA requires written informed consent that includes risk information and notice that the government has not certified the vehicle as safe for carrying humans. As the agency puts it: “The FAA does not certify launch or reentry vehicles as safe for carrying humans.” Licensing should not be mistaken for a government guarantee of passenger safety. Blue Origin’s wider trajectory is a separate story
Blue Origin’s homepage included a June 30, 2026 update from CEO Dave Limp about recovery and rebuild work after a May 2026 New Glenn anomaly, with the company aiming to return to flight that year. New Glenn is a separate program from the New Shepard vehicle used for NS-31. The update is relevant to Blue Origin’s broader trajectory, but it does not establish that the 2025 Katy Perry flight failed. Blue Origin homepage.
