Not by itself. One-day shipping can have a lower footprint when a retailer has already positioned stock near customers and can deliver it efficiently by ground. But speed can also make it harder to combine orders, fill vehicles, and optimize routes. The right comparison counts the package’s whole journey and asks what the shopper would otherwise do—not simply whether the parcel arrives tomorrow.
What did Jeff Bezos’s claim leave out?
A 2019 GeekWire fact-check examined Bezos’s argument that one-day delivery could reduce carbon emissions. Anne Goodchild, director of the University of Washington’s Supply Chain Transportation and Logistics Center, cautioned that a shorter final leg does not prove a lower footprint from warehouse to doorstep. Retailers may need to move inventory closer to customers in advance, and those upstream movements belong in the calculation. GeekWire’s fact-check quoted Goodchild saying, “He’s changing other variables … he’s not including the complete door-to-door cost of the package.”
That distinction remains central: a fast parcel can travel less distance after an order is placed while relying on inventory positioning or transport choices that add emissions elsewhere. Speed is one part of the logistics system, not a measure of its environmental performance.
How can faster delivery raise or lower emissions?
Transport mode and distance
Air freight generally has higher emissions than ground transport, according to experts quoted by the Associated Press. Amazon’s 2024 Sustainability Report says that 90% of its imported transoceanic shipments moved by ocean freight and 10% by airfreight that year. Those are company-reported figures about imported shipments, not a breakdown of the transport used for one-day orders. Amazon also says it prioritizes lower-emission delivery methods where possible while balancing speed, cost, reliability, and convenience. Amazon’s 2024 Sustainability Report describes those trade-offs.

- 【Alternative to Cardboard】Replacing single-use cardboard boxes, 85% less carbon footprint, environment friendly, sustainable packaging.
- 【Unique Features】Made from lightweight corrugated PP panels, yet strong and durable, able to hold min. 50 lbs. and stack 200 lbs. With integrated lids and handles, collapse foldable to small thin packs, fit in luggage for travelling.
- 【Broad Applications】Versatile for personal, home, offices and all businesses, government, military and schools to move, store, organize, and for product deliveries in returnable boxes.
Inventory placement
Having an item near the customer can shorten its final journey. Amazon says it has been regionalizing inventory so more products are stored closer to customers. But the full accounting must include how that inventory reached its location. Goodchild noted in the 2019 fact-check that providing one-day delivery while relying less on air would require substantial supply-chain changes that could raise costs or reduce customer service.
Consolidation, vehicle fill, and routing
Fast deadlines can make it harder to wait for several items to travel together or to optimize delivery routes. In AP’s December 2025 report, MIT Center for Transportation and Logistics research scientist Sreedevi Rajagopalan described the risk of vans leaving half full and multiple rounds being made in the same neighborhood. She also explained that orders placed at different times may be processed separately rather than combined when both are marked for fast delivery.

Amazon’s own figures show why consolidation matters. For its U.S. Prime delivery-consolidation program in 2024, the company estimated that 452 million deliveries avoided more than 494 million boxes and 335,000 metric tons of CO₂e. These are Amazon’s program estimates, not an independent comparison of one-day and standard delivery.
What do recent figures show—and what do they not show?
| Reported figure | What it describes | What it cannot establish on its own |
|---|---|---|
| 10–12% higher emissions for the same demand under fast shipping, according to MIT research scientist Sreedevi Rajagopalan, as reported by AP in December 2025. | An attributed estimate about fast shipping’s effect under the scope described in the AP report. | A universal increase for every retailer, delivery network, or individual parcel; the report does not provide enough underlying method detail to generalize it. |
| 36% estimated CO₂ reduction when delivery is delayed one to two days, and 56% when delayed three to four days, according to Rajagopalan in AP’s December 2025 report. | Attributed estimates associated with delaying delivery. | A guaranteed saving for any particular order or network. |
| 7% year-over-year reduction in carbon emissions per shipped unit, reported by Amazon for 2025. | An Amazon-reported intensity change, alongside operational savings. | A decline in absolute emissions or proof that each expedited order became less emissive. |
| Nearly 500 million delivery trips avoided in 2025, according to Amazon. | Amazon’s estimate for its Amazon Day and add-items-to-an-upcoming-delivery options. | Independent verification or a direct one-day-versus-slower-delivery result. |
| 127 million vehicle miles avoided in 2025, according to Amazon. | Amazon’s estimate associated with smarter inventory placement. | The full lifecycle effect of one-day shipping. |
| 10 billion items delivered the same or next day worldwide in 2024, according to Amazon. | The scale of Amazon’s faster deliveries. | The emissions impact of those deliveries. |
| 1.5 billion packages delivered by Amazon electric vehicles in 2024. | Amazon’s reported package volume delivered by its electric vehicles. | The total emissions of the deliveries, including electricity generation and upstream transport. |
Rajagopalan’s estimates were reported by the Associated Press. Amazon’s 2025 figures come from its 2025 Sustainability Report summary. Emissions per shipped unit and total emissions answer different questions: an intensity figure can fall even if overall emissions do not.

Is home delivery greener than driving to a store?
There is no universal answer without a realistic alternative. A delivery may compare favorably with a dedicated car trip made just to buy one item. It may not compare favorably with a bus journey, a walk, or a multi-item shopping trip that was already planned. The UNCTAD Digital Economy Report 2024 discusses the environmental sustainability of e-commerce, including the importance of what online shopping replaces.
So “online shopping versus store shopping” is not a single emissions comparison. The outcome depends on the shopper’s trip, the number of items, transport modes, and how the retailer fulfills the order.
What can shoppers do to reduce delivery impact?
- Combine purchases when practical. Waiting to place a single order can make consolidation easier than sending separate expedited orders.
- Choose a later or designated delivery day when offered. A wider window may give the retailer more opportunity to consolidate deliveries. The specific impact varies by network; the AP-reported reductions are estimates, not a personal guarantee.
- Avoid ordering the same item repeatedly in separate rush orders. Rajagopalan told AP that an earlier order may already be processed before a later fast-shipping order arrives, preventing consolidation.
- Compare with the trip you would actually take. A dedicated car journey is not equivalent to transit or an errand combined with other stops.
So, is one-day shipping really more eco-friendly?
It can be under a logistics system that places inventory nearby, limits high-emission transport, and keeps routes and vehicles efficient. But the delivery speed alone does not make it greener. Amazon reports improvements in inventory placement, consolidation, vehicle miles, and emissions intensity, yet those company metrics do not independently prove that choosing one-day shipping lowers the footprint of a particular order compared with a slower option.
