As of October 8, 2026, the latest USDA soybean figures were forecasts for the 2026/27 marketing year; the October World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report was scheduled for October 9 and had not yet been released.
Why weather matters—and why a forecast is not a crop loss
Growing-season weather can affect yields and the amount of corn or soybeans expected to reach market. The effect depends on where and when conditions occur, how much of the crop is exposed, and whether observed stress translates into lower production. A weather forecast is therefore a possible source of changing expectations, not proof that a crop has been damaged or that prices must rise.
Follow weather observations and crop progress together. USDA’s Weekly Weather and Crop Bulletin reports weather, temperature, precipitation, state narratives, and international agricultural conditions. USDA NASS offers crop-progress reports, condition charts, soil-moisture graphics, historical data, and gridded corn and soybean crop-progress layers through its crop progress resources. Ratings and weather data provide context; neither establishes a price move on its own.
What else can support corn and soybean prices?
Prices reflect expected supply relative to expected use, along with how those expectations change. USDA’s monthly WASDE forecasts supply and use for U.S. and world coarse grains and oilseeds. Its estimates bring together factors such as production, stocks, domestic use, and trade—not just growing conditions. The WASDE reports are a useful place to compare changes in those balances from one report to the next.

- Stocks and production: Expected harvest size and beginning or ending stocks help indicate how much supply may be available relative to use.
- Domestic demand: Corn has major livestock-feed uses as well as food and industrial uses. Soybean crush turns beans into meal and oil, so processing demand can affect the outlook for beans and products.
- Exports and competition: Foreign purchases, competing suppliers, and trade conditions can alter expected U.S. sales and global availability.
- Market expectations: Futures can move as traders reassess forecasts, demand, geopolitical developments, or policy signals. A change in expectations can matter even before a crop or shipment outcome is confirmed.
These drivers can reinforce or offset weather-related concerns. A smaller expected crop does not automatically mean a larger price gain if stocks are ample or demand weakens; stronger demand or tighter stocks can matter even without a weather shock.
What the latest soybean outlook says
In its September 18, 2026 outlook, USDA’s Economic Research Service (ERS) raised its U.S. 2026/27 soybean production forecast by 16 million bushels, to 4.5 billion bushels. ERS forecast ending stocks of 310 million bushels and a season-average soybean price of $12.00 per bushel. The table is a snapshot of one forecast vintage, not a statement of final 2026/27 supply, demand, or prices. The figures should be read together: production, exports, crush, and ending stocks describe different parts of the balance, while the season-average price is an estimate rather than a futures quote or a farm-level cash price.
What recent futures movement can—and cannot—tell you
CME Group reported that corn futures returned 15.82% and soybean futures returned 8.40% in August 2026. Its market update associated conditions with geopolitical tensions, crop forecasts, domestic crush margins, international purchases, and policy signals affecting soybean-oil demand. Those returns describe that month alone; they do not identify weather’s share of the move, predict future prices, or represent what every farmer received in cash markets. How to judge whether weather is becoming price-relevant
- Pin down the report date and marketing year. Compare forecasts from the same agency and note when each was issued; estimates can change as information arrives.
- Check the crop evidence. Pair weather reports with crop condition and progress data. Look for whether conditions affect key production areas and whether the crop’s development stage makes the timing consequential.
- Compare supply with use. Review production, stocks, feed and other domestic use, soybean crush, and exports rather than focusing on yield alone.
- Check global context and market response. Consider international supply and purchases, then distinguish a change in futures from a change in local cash prices.
- Separate estimate from outcome. Forecasts and monthly futures returns are dated observations. Neither guarantees the eventual harvest, marketing-year average, or next price move.
What is known about corn as of October 8, 2026
The evidence available for this date does not establish a current numeric USDA corn outlook, so an older season’s estimate should not be treated as current. USDA scheduled the October 2026 WASDE release for October 9, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. Eastern; its new estimates were not available on October 8. Corn prices should be assessed using the report vintage in hand, along with relevant weather, crop progress, supply, use, and trade data.
