Yes. In J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, Land Rover recorded 274 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100), compared with Volvo’s 296. Because lower is better, Land Rover scored better in this study. Lexus led premium brands at 151 PP100; Buick led mass-market brands.
How the 2026 brand scores compare
The figures below are J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. brand scores. PP100 is a standardized count of reported problems per 100 vehicles—not the percentage of vehicles that failed.

J.D. Power says lower scores indicate higher dependability. The 22-point Land Rover–Volvo difference is arithmetic based on the published scores, not a test of statistical significance. J.D. Power cautions that numerical score differences do not necessarily represent statistically significant differences. See the 2026 study release.
What the Vehicle Dependability Study measures
The VDS surveys original owners about problems they experienced with three-year-old vehicles. The 2026 results therefore describe reported ownership experiences for that cohort in the United States. They are not a reliability guarantee for an individual used car, nor a direct forecast for every new vehicle or model year. J.D. PP100 puts reported problems on a common scale: the number of problems per 100 vehicles. It is not a failure rate, and a score above 100 does not mean that more than 100 percent of vehicles failed. A vehicle may have more than one reported problem.
What stands out beyond the brand ranking
The 2026 industry average was 204 PP100, two points above 2025 and the highest recorded since J.D. Power redesigned the study in 2022. Of the nine problem categories, infotainment ranked worst at 56.7 PP100; exterior problems were next at 27.5 PP100. The release’s category findings point to technology as a major source of reported issues.

Jason Norton, J.D. Power’s director of auto benchmarking, said owners continue to report mobile-phone integration problems and little or no benefit after software updates, despite expectations that updates and new technology should improve ownership.

These are comparisons between the published U.S. study editions, not proof of a lasting brand trend. A two-year comparison cannot establish how a different model year or an individual vehicle will perform. The 2025 release provides the earlier scores.

What this means if you are choosing a car
If you are comparing brands, the 2026 VDS makes Land Rover the better-scoring of these two brands on its reported-problems measure, while Lexus leads the premium-brand ranking overall. Treat that as one piece of context rather than a stand-alone buying decision: the study averages reported experiences across a three-year-old owner cohort, not the history or condition of a particular car.
For a used vehicle, consider the specific model, year, maintenance and inspection history, and condition. For a new vehicle, remember that the study’s three-year-old cohort does not directly measure that model year. The results also do not establish that every owner of a lower-scoring brand experienced a problem.
