The Holland battery plant is operated by LG Energy Solution Michigan, the company formed after LG Chem spun off its battery business. The facility’s current focus is lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells for grid-scale energy storage: LG Energy Solution says production began in May 2025, with annual capacity of 16.5 GWh. That is distinct from the 25 GWh total-capacity target LG announced for a broader Holland expansion in 2022; the available disclosures do not confirm that the target was reached.
What is LG Chem building in Holland, Michigan?
The “new” facility is an expansion on LG Energy Solution Michigan’s existing Holland site, not a newly announced factory under the LG Chem name. LG Energy Solution Michigan is the current operator; its predecessor established a Holland presence in 2010. LG Energy Solution is the battery business spun off from LG Chem, which is why older reports and the project’s history use the LG Chem name. LG Energy Solution Michigan’s company history and the State of Michigan’s 2022 announcement document that transition.
LG announced the expansion on March 22, 2022, on 1.4 million square feet of vacant, company-owned land. It described manufacturing, testing and warehouse capabilities, and said the site would make battery cells for electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage systems (ESS). The company also described a “long cell design” intended to improve energy density by making better use of battery-pack space; that was a stated design aim, not an independently verified performance result. LG Energy Solution’s expansion announcement set out those plans.
What does the Holland battery factory make now?
Recent disclosures connect Holland to stationary, grid-scale energy storage. LG Energy Solution’s March 2026 offering circular says production began in May 2025 at its Michigan LFP battery manufacturing facility, which has annual capacity of 16.5 GWh for grid-scale ESS. A separate 2026 LG announcement describes Holland as producing up to 16.5 GWh of battery-storage cells. LFP stands for lithium iron phosphate, a battery chemistry; ESS means energy storage system. These disclosures support a current account of Holland’s storage-cell production, but do not say that every cell made at the site is for one customer or project. LG’s 2026 disclosure and its March 2026 offering circular provide the reported figures.

How does 16.5 GWh compare with the 25 GWh expansion target?
The figures describe different disclosures at different points in the project, and should not be treated as a direct before-and-after comparison of identical production.
| Figure | What it describes | Status and source date |
|---|---|---|
| 25 GWh per year | LG’s planned total annual capacity for EV and ESS battery-cell production in Holland, up from 5 GWh | Expansion target announced in 2022 for 2025; not confirmed as achieved by the cited sources. LG, March 22, 2022 |
| 16.5 GWh per year | Michigan LFP battery production capacity for grid-scale ESS; LG also describes up to 16.5 GWh of Holland battery-storage cell production | LG’s 2026 disclosures say production began in May 2025. The sources do not establish that the earlier 25 GWh target was formally revised or reached. LG, 2026 |
GWh, or gigawatt-hours, measures energy capacity. The 16.5 GWh figure is an annual production-capacity disclosure, not the amount of energy the plant has already produced or the capacity of one battery project.

How many jobs will the Holland battery plant create?
In 2022, LG Energy Solution and Michigan officials announced a plan for 1,200 new jobs by 2025. That number is a target, not a verified count of jobs filled or currently employed at the plant. The sources cited here do not establish the final hiring total. The state announcement gives the announced job figure and related public support.
What did Michigan offer to support the expansion?
The state’s 2022 announcement listed two performance-based grants of $10 million each, up to $36.5 million in equipment reimbursement through Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds, and a 20-year Renaissance Zone with an estimated value of $132.6 million. These are announced package terms and an estimated tax-zone value—not proof that all grant or reimbursement funds were paid, that the full estimated value was realized, or that the project delivered a particular public return. Michigan’s release provides the terms and estimate.

How did the Holland expansion progress?
- 2010: Michigan reported that LG Chem’s $303 million, 600,000-square-foot Holland cell plant was under construction and expected to begin operating in 2012, with up to 400 employees. These were expectations at the time, not a current plant specification. The state also reported a nearby electrolyte plant was in design and subject to LG Chem board review; that announcement does not establish that the electrolyte project was built. Michigan’s 2010 release describes both proposals.
- March 2022: LG announced a $1.7 billion expansion, a plan to raise annual capacity from 5 GWh to 25 GWh by 2025, and 1,200 new jobs targeted by 2025. The company initially scheduled the expansion to open in 2024. These were plans, not confirmed outcomes. LG’s announcement and Michigan’s release record the targets.
- May 2023: LG Energy Solution Michigan reported that the expansion’s steel framework had topped out. The company cited nearly 525,000 project man-hours, more than 18,000 steel pieces and 16,000 tons of steel, and then expected construction to finish by 2025. These are construction-milestone figures, not measures of operating capacity. The company’s milestone announcement gives the details.
- May 2025: LG Energy Solution’s 2026 filing reports that production began at the Michigan LFP facility for grid-scale ESS, with annual capacity of 16.5 GWh. The 2026 filing reports this start and capacity.
- May 27, 2026: DTE Energy announced an agreement for storage systems manufactured in Holland for eight projects across Michigan. The agreement is for 1.5 GW of power and 6 GWh of energy capacity, with delivery over two years. DTE’s announcement describes the agreement.
What does the DTE agreement mean for Michigan’s power grid?
DTE says the planned systems will store electricity when generation exceeds demand and dispatch it during peak demand. Its agreement with LG Energy Solution Vertech covers eight Michigan projects totaling 1.5 GW and 6 GWh, with Holland-manufactured systems to be delivered over two years. The 1.5 GW figure is power—the rate at which systems can supply electricity—while 6 GWh is energy—the amount they can store. The agreement is a procurement and delivery plan, not evidence that all eight projects are already built or operating. DTE’s May 2026 release sets out the project scope and stated use.
