By the event, the response had grown to more than 40 candidates for three positions, and more than 250 people attended, according to ABC News. The early and later figures describe different stages of the search—not conflicting final counts.
Why Hannans Hotel was recruiting male skimpies
In June 2018, Hannans Hotel was planning a ladies’ night for 28 July and seeking men to serve drinks as “skimpies”—bartenders wearing revealing outfits. The event was presented as a one-off. Contemporary reports described the planned clothing as jeans and a bow tie, with a g-string later in the evening; those details refer to this event, not a general dress standard or a current job listing.
ABC’s initial report placed the proposal in the context of Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s skimpy barmaid tradition and described it as a revival of an idea briefly tried in the area more than a decade earlier. Why the search was called luckless
Initial coverage described difficulty attracting male applicants. On 29 June, PerthNow quoted hotel manager Tracy Julin saying, “We’re finding it difficult to get blokes on board.” PerthNow reported that the hotel had been looking for about a month; ABC said the advertising had produced one expression of interest in roughly two months, while The West Australian reported “a couple” of applicants.

Those descriptions are early snapshots from the recruitment period. An expression of interest, an applicant, and a later candidate count are not interchangeable measures, and the early reports do not establish a single final tally.

How the response changed by the event
By late July, the recruitment story had reversed. ABC’s 29 July follow-up reported that more than 40 candidates competed for three positions and that more than 250 people attended the event. It identified the selected men as Matty Abbott, Byron Phillips, and Billy Bosco. ABC News, 29 July 2018

The Kalgoorlie Miner reported 40 applications for the three roles, and The West Australian also reported 40 applications. Julin told ABC she had been surprised by the turnout: “Stunned, I wasn’t expecting so much interest and it’s really taken off.” The remark captures the change from the search’s quiet start to the event’s substantial response.

Did male skimpy nights become a monthly event?
After the event, Julin told ABC that male skimpies would become a monthly feature, following the strong response. That was her stated intention in July 2018; the reporting cited here does not establish whether the nights continued or what Hannans Hotel’s schedule is now. The announcement should therefore be read as a plan made at the time, not confirmation of a present-day recurring event.
