Divide the first figure by the second and the result is 140, so the commonly repeated comparison is 140 to 1. But these are reported amounts, not verified payroll figures—and a 1994 report said people close to the production disputed whether Carrey’s deal was really worth $7 million.
How much were Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels reportedly paid?
In 2014, The Washington Post reported that Carrey received $7 million for the 1994 comedy and Daniels made about $50,000. The paper attributed the comparison to comments by directors Bobby and Peter Farrelly during the press tour for the sequel.

Those reported amounts yield a 140-to-1 ratio: $7,000,000 ÷ $50,000 = 140. Since Daniels’s figure is approximate, the ratio is approximate too. It describes the comparison between the two reported figures; it does not establish either actor’s final net compensation.
Was Carrey’s $7 million pay confirmed at the time?
Not conclusively. In March 1994, The Washington Post reported that New Line Cinema had signed Carrey to what was said to be a $7 million deal. The same article described disagreement among people close to production: some thought he would more likely take home more than $4 million, while others said a bidding war after Ace Ventura: Pet Detective had pushed his price to $7 million.

That contemporary account makes “reported $7 million deal” more accurate than saying Carrey definitively took home $7 million. The available reporting does not establish a final contract amount or net pay.

A 2014 Business Standard article republishing an ANI report attributes the two figures to the Farrelly brothers in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Its headline says “140 times,” but its body says “150 times.” The listed amounts—$7 million and about $50,000—calculate to 140, not 150. The arithmetic supports 140 as the ratio of those figures.

What the comparison does—and doesn’t—tell you
- It compares reported compensation: later coverage gives the figures and attributes them to the directors, while contemporary coverage reported a $7 million deal amid disagreement over the amount.
- It is not a verified payroll record: no independently sourced salary ledger, contract, or payroll record establishes the actors’ final compensation.
- It is a ratio, not a complete measure of earnings: the comparison says nothing by itself about taxes, deductions, bonuses, or other compensation.
