At launch, Markato was a cross-border wholesale marketplace connecting independent brands with Asian retailers. Its current website describes a broader market-entry and distribution operation; those are distinct snapshots, not proof that every launch-era marketplace feature remains available.
What Lightspeed backed in 2023
TechCrunch reported that Markato launched in Hong Kong with a US$5 million seed round led by Lightspeed, reportedly the investor’s first investment in Hong Kong. The report named Brian Lo and Martin Li as the founders. TechCrunch’s August 28, 2023 report described the business as a place for independent overseas brands and Asian retailers to find one another and manage wholesale operations.
The opportunity Markato set out to address was a cumbersome sourcing process: retailers and brands relying on trade shows, cold emails, forms, and purchase orders. Rather than treating wholesale as a one-off introduction, the marketplace aimed to bring product discovery and ordering into one service.
How the launch-era marketplace was meant to work
For retailers
Retailers could receive personalized product recommendations and place wholesale orders. Markato also said it aggregated order volume and offered retailers 60-day payment terms and 90-day free returns. These were terms reported at launch in 2023, not confirmed current policies.

For brands
Brands were offered a route to Asian retail buyers alongside wholesale operations support. TechCrunch reported that the platform provided analytics intended to help brands make production and pricing decisions, while reducing customer-acquisition and operating costs. These were launch-era descriptions, not independently verified results.
The launch coverage named ceramics, wellness, candles, and jewelry among the product categories on the marketplace. They were examples of inventory, not the central point of the financing story.

How Markato describes its business today
Markato’s current website presents a wider role than a wholesale marketplace: a brand-building and distribution partner for companies entering Asian markets. The company says its services cover strategy and market entry, registration and labeling, import support, retail-channel management, direct-to-consumer and marketplace operations, paid marketing and KOL campaigns, localized content, warehousing, logistics, and consumer and retail analytics. Its site also describes cross-border entry into China. These are company descriptions, not independent verification of results or service availability in every market.
Markato says it can support brands across channels including Watsons, Mannings, Guardian, Sephora, Shopee, Lazada, TikTok Shop, Coupang, and Momo. The named channels indicate the breadth of the company’s stated retail and marketplace relationships; they do not establish that every brand can access every channel or that a particular listing or sales outcome is guaranteed.

The company’s website says in one section that it operates across five Asia-Pacific markets and has more than 2,000 points of sale. A separate map section lists three active markets and three planned markets. Because these descriptions do not align into a single unambiguous footprint count, treat both as Markato’s website claims rather than combining them into a definitive market total. The same site advertises 30 million-plus addressable customers and, in a case study, 27 million views from KOL content; it does not display a publication year for these figures.

The comparison describes a change in how the business is presented, not a verified account of a corporate restructuring or the discontinuation of the original marketplace. Markato’s May 24, 2023 brand terms describe its marketplace arrangement and identify Markato HK Limited, but that dated document does not establish that all contractual terms remain unchanged today.

What the funding story does—and does not—establish
The reported round and launch provide a concrete snapshot of Markato’s initial proposition: make cross-border wholesale easier for independent brands and Asian retailers. The company’s current presentation suggests a broader service model around entering and operating in Asian markets. The available reporting and company material do not establish how the business has performed against other distributors, whether its stated reach is independently verified, or whether every launch-era feature remains active.
For brands considering the service, the practical questions are specific: which markets are currently active, which channels are accessible for their category, what regulatory and logistics work is included, and what commercial terms apply. Markato’s public descriptions identify areas it says it supports, but answers to those operational and contractual questions require confirmation directly with the company.
