Li Hejun’s current net worth is not established by the available sources. The published estimates are historical, vary widely, and were closely tied to the changing value of Hanergy shares—not a verified statement of cash or personal assets.
What was Li Hejun’s net worth?
There is no substantiated current figure in the sources reviewed. The reported amounts are estimates published at different times and by different organizations, with differences in how Hanergy-related assets were counted. They should not be averaged or treated as directly comparable.
| Estimate | Publisher and date | What the source said |
|---|---|---|
| $1.1 billion | Forbes, September 8, 2013 | Based on Li’s interest in listed Hanergy Solar Group shares; Forbes said it excluded his unlisted hydropower and wind assets. Forbes |
| $26 billion | Hurun estimate, reported by TIME on February 4, 2015 | TIME reported Hurun’s estimate for its 2015 Global Rich List and linked Li’s rise to his privately owned energy company. TIME |
| $33 billion | Forbes, March 5, 2015 | A dated estimate reported after Hanergy shares reached a record. Forbes connected the rise to the share price and identified Li as the company’s main owner. Forbes |
| $3.2 billion | Forbes, 2016 | Forbes’ global energy billionaires gallery listed Li at this amount. Forbes |
Why did the estimates change so sharply?
Hanergy’s share price affected the calculations
Forbes’ March 2015 estimate rose as Hanergy shares surged. A share-price-based estimate can move sharply with the market value assigned to a large ownership stake; it does not mean the owner has that amount available in cash. Forbes also noted that much of Hanergy’s listed business had been with its parent and that the company’s tight public float and high valuation raised concern among some observers.
The estimates did not cover the same assets
Forbes’ 2013 figure was explicitly limited to listed Hanergy Solar shares and excluded unlisted hydropower and wind assets. The sources do not establish that the later estimates used the same asset scope or methodology, so the figures cannot be read as a clean year-to-year account of Li’s total wealth.

What happened to Hanergy after the 2015 valuation peak?
Hanergy Thin Film Power shares were suspended from trading on July 15, 2015, according to a later Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission release. That release described court orders disqualifying Li from being a director or participating in the management of a Hong Kong corporation for eight years, and ordering Hanergy Holding and/or affiliates to procure payment of outstanding receivables due to Hanergy.
The SFC also summarized serious breaches of duty that Li admitted. It said an undisclosed RMB900 million loan from a Hanergy subsidiary to Hanergy Holding had not been disclosed to Hanergy shareholders or submitted for their approval. The regulator’s statement provides corporate-governance context for the historical valuation story; it does not establish Li’s present net worth or speak to later legal events. The SFC’s Executive Director of Enforcement, Thomas Atkinson, said: “Listed company directors should always put the company’s interests first.” Hong Kong SFC

Best Value
- From the acclaimed, award-winning author of Alexander Hamilton: here is the essential, endlessly engrossing biography of John D. Rockefeller, Sr.—the Jekyll-and-Hyde of American capitalism.
- In the course of his nearly 98 years, Rockefeller was known as both a rapacious robber baron, whose Standard Oil Company rode roughshod over an industry, and a philanthropist who donated money lavishly to universities and medical centers.
- He was the terror of his competitors, the bogeyman of reformers, the delight of caricaturists—and an utter enigma.
How should Li Hejun’s reported wealth be interpreted?
- Treat the dollar amounts as historical estimates from their stated dates, not as a current valuation.
- Keep the publisher and asset scope attached to each figure; the 2013 Forbes estimate, for example, excluded unlisted energy assets.
- Do not interpret an estimated value of shares as liquid cash or as an audited personal balance sheet. The cited sources report estimates, not a personal audited net-worth statement.
- Because the sources use different dates and do not establish a consistent methodology, a present-day net-worth number cannot be reliably derived from them.
