Lerer Hippeau closed $200 million for LH Fund IX, its ninth fund, on April 9, 2025. The early-stage fund is focused on pre-seed and seed companies. The announcement marked 15 years since the firm began in 2010.

What is LH Fund IX?

LH Fund IX is Lerer Hippeau’s ninth venture fund. The firm said it raised $200 million in new capital for investments exclusively at the early stage, specifically pre-seed and seed. The April 9, 2025 announcement was authored by managing partners Ben Lerer, Eric Hippeau, and Graham Brown. Lerer Hippeau’s announcement and Axios’s report both put the raise at $200 million.

How does Fund IX compare with the previous fund?

Lerer Hippeau stated that LH Fund VIII was $140 million, making Fund IX $60 million larger. Axios reported that each of the firm’s nine funds had been slightly larger than its predecessor. These are fund-size comparisons, not evidence about investment returns or performance.

What does the firm say it looks for?

Lerer Hippeau describes its method as talent-driven and generalist rather than tied to one industry. Its stated approach is to identify exceptional people, consider whether they are pursuing a potentially large market, and assess whether they have distinctive insight and a credible right to win. The firm presented this as its investment philosophy, not as a guaranteed outcome or a detailed Fund IX screening formula.

Is Fund IX focused only on New York?

No. Lerer Hippeau says its thesis has principally centered on New York, but the available accounts do not establish an exclusive New York-only mandate. The firm connects its local roots to the maturation of the city’s technology ecosystem. Ben Lerer told Axios in April 2025 that New York had moved beyond being viewed mainly as a consumer or media town, and described substantial businesses being built locally in areas beyond those categories. That is his assessment of the ecosystem, not an independently measured ranking.

Which sectors has Lerer Hippeau backed?

The firm’s announcement cited a broad historical range of portfolio areas: robotics, infrastructure, healthcare, crypto, logistics, fintech, commerce, DevOps, climate, cybersecurity, gaming, consumer packaged goods, and biotech. These examples illustrate the firm’s past generalist activity; they are not a complete list or a binding statement that Fund IX will invest in each sector.

What is known about the fund’s investors?

Lerer Hippeau said dozens of its portfolio-company founders participated as limited partners in Fund IX. The firm did not give an exact count or disclose individual commitments in the announcement, so “dozens” should not be read as a precise total.
