Litecoin (LTC) is an open-source cryptocurrency whose transfers are recorded on its blockchain. Its protocol targets a block about every 2.5 minutes, and its maximum supply is 84 million LTC. The price is not fixed: it varies by exchange and changes continuously, so check a timestamped market quote rather than relying on an undated figure.
What is Litecoin?
Litecoin is a peer-to-peer digital currency maintained by a decentralized network. People can send LTC to one another, and miners use proof of work to help process transactions and secure the blockchain. Litecoin’s project website describes it as “a digital money enabling instant, near-zero cost payments worldwide”; that is the project’s own tagline, not a guarantee that every transfer is instant or has a particular fee.
Litecoin’s target block interval is approximately 2.5 minutes. That is a protocol target, not a promise that a block will be produced on a precise schedule or that a payment is final after one block. Confirmation timing and transaction fees can vary.
What is the price of LTC?
LTC has no single universal price. The quote depends on the provider, the exchanges and markets it aggregates, and the time checked. CoinGecko says its displayed price is a real-time, volume-weighted aggregate across exchanges and markets; an individual exchange may show a different price.

At the time CoinGecko data was retrieved for this article on October 8, 2026, it showed LTC at $65.59. Its same-time snapshot showed a market capitalization of about $5.096 billion, 24-hour trading volume of about $275.3 million, circulating supply of approximately 77.692 million LTC, total supply of approximately 77.695 million LTC, and maximum supply of 84 million LTC. These figures are a dated provider snapshot, not a current quote or an official network measurement. Check CoinGecko’s Litecoin page for its current quote and data, and note the time and provider when comparing figures.
Market capitalization and trading volume are market indicators, not measures of guaranteed value or future returns. Price movements do not reliably predict what LTC will be worth later.

How does Litecoin’s supply and mining work?
Litecoin uses proof of work. Miners compete to produce blocks, and the protocol adjusts mining difficulty every 2,016 blocks—roughly 3.5 days according to the SEC filing cited here. Mining also issues new LTC through a block subsidy.
- Maximum supply: 84 million LTC.
- Halving interval: the subsidy is reduced by half every 840,000 blocks.
- Current subsidy established by the latest cited halving: 6.25 LTC per block, following the August 2, 2023 halving at block height 2,520,000. The SEC filing says this subsidy applies through height 3,359,999.
The 6.25 LTC figure describes the subsidy after that dated halving; it is not a promise of a fixed mining return. The next subsidy change depends on reaching the next 840,000-block interval. For the protocol figures and dated halving details, see the SEC filing describing Litecoin’s network and issuance.

Where can I check Litecoin data and news?
Use market aggregators for timestamped price, supply, capitalization, volume, and news discovery. Those figures may differ across providers because their sources and update times differ. Do not combine a price from one time with volume or supply data from another without labeling the mismatch.
A rolling news feed can surface stories, but a headline alone does not establish that an announced proposal, filing, or partnership has taken effect. For an important claim, read the underlying announcement or filing and distinguish its publication date from the date of the event.

Which Litecoin Core version is current?
Litecoin.org listed Litecoin Core 0.21.5.8 when the cited information was reviewed. The project’s release notes characterize 0.21.5.8 as a maintenance release involving MWEB validation, transaction relay, mining, and resource management, and recommend upgrading. Software releases can change; check the official Litecoin project release page for the latest version and release notes before downloading.
Litecoin.org describes Litecoin Core as an advanced full-node wallet that downloads the blockchain, and Electrum-LTC as a simpler wallet option. A full node and a lightweight wallet serve different needs; choose based on whether you want to download and maintain the blockchain locally. Hardware wallets are another self-custody category, but confirm LTC support for the exact device and its companion app on the manufacturer’s official asset list before buying.

What should I compare before using or buying LTC?
- Market quote: identify the provider and timestamp, and remember that exchange prices can differ.
- Network properties: compare target block interval, proof-of-work design, supply cap, and halving schedule. A target interval alone does not establish that one cryptocurrency is faster in practical use.
- Transaction cost and confirmation: check current fees and define what you mean by confirmation; broad claims that Litecoin is always cheaper or faster require comparable, current measurements.
- Wallet fit: distinguish a full node from a simpler wallet, and independently verify a hardware wallet’s current asset and app support.
- Risk: cryptocurrency prices can change substantially. Market data and past movement do not guarantee future performance.
