In the U.S., a cashier’s check is a common bank-issued example: the bank takes the purchaser’s money and writes a check to the named payee. A genuine cashier’s check is backed by the issuing bank, but counterfeit checks exist, and a deposit showing as available does not prove a check is genuine. ACH and wire transfers move money electronically through different systems, so the right choice depends on the payment’s timing, cost, limits and protections.
What is a bank draft?
“Bank draft” is a broad term whose meaning can vary by bank and jurisdiction. U.S. consumer guidance commonly discusses cashier’s checks and official bank checks; do not assume every instrument called a bank draft is legally identical to a U.S. cashier’s check.
For a cashier’s check, the purchaser pays the bank, which takes money from the purchaser’s checking or savings account into the bank’s own account and writes the check to the payee. The FDIC describes cashier’s checks as checks guaranteed by a financial institution and generally safer than personal checks because the institution guarantees a genuine check. Recipients may prefer them because the bank presumably has collected the purchaser’s funds—but “presumably” is important: counterfeit official checks are used in scams. FDIC Consumer News, “Beware of Fake Checks” (August 2019).
How does a bank draft differ from ACH and a wire?
A cashier’s check is a paper check issued by a bank. ACH and wire transfers are electronic payments, but they use different processing paths. The CFPB defines ACH as electronic money transfers between banks and credit unions through the Automated Clearing House network. Common uses include payroll direct deposit, recurring debits and bill payments. A wire is an electronic transfer between bank accounts, domestic or international; a transfer between U.S. bank or credit-union accounts is likely a domestic wire.

| Payment method | How it works | Timing and completion | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cashier’s check (a U.S. bank-issued check) | The purchaser provides funds to the bank, and the bank writes a check to the payee. | Deposit availability is governed by applicable rules and bank policies; availability does not establish that the check is genuine. | Issuing-bank verification, any purchase fee, and how the recipient will verify the check. |
| ACH | Electronic transfer between banks and credit unions over the ACH network. | It may clear quickly, including the same day in some circumstances, but processing and safeguards can mean several days; a transaction may be returned for insufficient funds. | Provider’s fees, limits, processing estimate and instructions for handling an error. |
| Wire | Electronic transfer between bank accounts, domestic or international. | Timing depends on the provider and its cutoff; ask for an estimate for the particular transfer. | Fees, limits, cutoff, recipient details and error-handling process. |
These distinctions are based on CFPB descriptions of ACH transactions and wire transfers. Neither ACH nor wires should be assumed universally instant or free. Ask the institution handling the payment for its current terms.
Is a bank draft safer than a personal check?
A genuine cashier’s check has the issuing bank’s backing, unlike a personal check drawn on an individual’s account. That backing can make it a more dependable form of payment for a recipient, but it does not authenticate the piece of paper in hand. The FDIC warns that counterfeit cashier’s and official bank checks can be difficult to identify even by visual inspection.

How to verify a suspicious check
- Look up the purported issuing bank’s official website independently and find its contact information there. Do not rely only on a phone number printed on the check.
- Contact the bank using that independently sourced number and ask it to verify the check details.
- Be especially cautious if the check was unexpected, is for more than the agreed amount, or comes with pressure to return money or pay fees.
The FDIC’s fake-check guidance recommends contacting the issuing institution through independently obtained contact details.
Does available money mean a cashier’s check has cleared?
No. Banks may have to make some deposited funds available quickly, while a fake check can take weeks to be discovered. A displayed balance, an early release of funds or a teller accepting a deposit is not proof that a check is genuine. If you spend or send the money and the check later proves counterfeit, you may have to repay the bank.

A common scam involves an apparent cashier’s check followed by a request to send back an overpayment or pay fees using a wire, gift card, cash, ACH or another method. The FTC advises treating such requests as warning signs: do not send money back simply because the funds appear in your account. See the FTC’s guidance on spotting and avoiding fake-check scams.
Deposit availability rules are not the same as the completion time for an outgoing payment. The CFPB says electronic payments such as ACH and wires, as well as certain in-person cashier’s checks, generally must be available by the next business day, subject to exceptions and longer-hold circumstances. That rule concerns access to deposited funds; it does not make every deposited check genuine or set a universal timeline for sending money. CFPB guidance on deposit availability.

What protections apply to drafts, ACH and wires?
In the U.S., Regulation E covers many electronic fund transfers from consumer accounts, including many ACH transactions. It excludes transfers originated by check or similar paper instrument and certain wire transfers, including Fedwire or similar systems used primarily between financial institutions or businesses. The label alone does not settle coverage; the transaction’s facts matter.
A paper check can also be used to obtain account information for a one-time ACH debit. In that case, the payment may be treated as an electronic fund transfer, with different protections than a paper check. For help determining how a particular payment is classified, consult the CFPB’s Regulation E text and its explanation of checks converted into electronic transfers. Contact your bank promptly if you spot an error.

How to choose a payment method
There is no universally best option. Before paying or accepting a payment, compare the actual terms for the specific transaction and institution:
- Expected completion: Ask when the payment is expected to complete, including relevant processing days and cutoffs. ACH may take several days; a wire’s timing depends on its provider and cutoff.
- Cost and limits: Check fees and transaction limits with the institution. ACH providers may impose fees or limits; wire fees and limits are institution-specific.
- Access to deposited funds: Find out when funds are expected to be available, but do not treat availability as proof that a check is genuine.
- Fraud risk: Verify an unexpected bank check independently, and do not return an overpayment or pay a fee from its proceeds before the check is verified.
- Error handling: Ask how to report an error and what protections apply to the particular payment rail. ACH, paper checks and certain wires do not all receive identical treatment.
For an ACH or wire, confirm the recipient’s details carefully and get the provider’s transaction-specific price, cutoff, limit and timing before authorizing payment. For a bank-issued check, establish how the recipient can verify it with the issuing bank.
