It was named the club’s preferred bidder on 24 December 2025, then withdrew on 25 February 2026. Arise Capital Partners LLC was later selected and completed the purchase in May 2026, taking the club out of administration. The latest direct confirmation of the sale cited here is from May 2026, so later ownership or financial developments should be checked against a newer official update.
What happened to James Bord’s takeover bid?
Bord’s group was a preferred bidder, not Sheffield Wednesday’s eventual owner. Its selection put the consortium into the sale process; it did not mean the acquisition had completed. On 25 February 2026, the consortium withdrew its bid, opening the way for the administrators to select another bidder.
In its withdrawal statement, the consortium said: “The historic mishandling of the club and pattern of catastrophic underinvestment means our sizeable binding bid can no longer be justified.” That is the bidder’s explanation, not an independently established finding or a final account of every factor behind the withdrawal. The cited reporting does not establish that the bid was rejected in an EFL owners’ test.
Sheffield Wednesday takeover timeline
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| 30 October 2025 | Companies House filing history records the appointment of administrators for Sheffield Wednesday Football Club Limited. Companies House filing history |
| 24 December 2025 | Bord’s consortium was named preferred bidder. BBC Sport reported that the group included Bord, Felix Romer and Alsharif Faisal Bin Jamil. BBC Sport |
| 25 February 2026 | The consortium withdrew. BBC Sport reported a proposed bid of £47.8 million and a £2.5 million non-refundable deposit. It also reported the consortium’s claim that it had spent more than £4 million helping run the club; that spending figure was not an independently audited amount in the report. BBC Sport |
| 10 March 2026 | The joint administrators named Arise Capital Partners LLC as preferred bidder. Their update said Arise had provided a substantial deposit and evidence of funds, entered an exclusivity period, and committed to fund trading losses after eight weeks if the sale had not completed by then. The administrators said the offer was below the amount needed to return 25 pence in the pound to creditors, but represented the best available outcome at that point. | 2 May 2026 | The EFL announced that the transfer of club assets to Arise had completed and Sheffield Wednesday was no longer in administration. EFL statement |
| 5 May 2026 | BTG, the administrators’ firm, published a completion statement confirming the sale to Arise. BTG completion statement |

These are the latest direct ownership confirmations cited here, not evidence of changes or events after those dates.

Why did Sheffield Wednesday avoid a 15-point deduction?
When it confirmed the club’s exit from administration in May 2026, the EFL said it would not impose a 15-point deduction for that exit. Instead, it imposed a budget restriction for the next two seasons and said player registrations had to comply with a jointly agreed business plan. Those are the conditions announced with the sale; they should not be assumed to describe the club’s position after May 2026 without a later EFL update. EFL statement, 2 May 2026

The £47.8 million bid, £2.5 million deposit and claim of more than £4 million in support spending were reported by BBC Sport in connection with the Bord consortium’s withdrawal. They are not a like-for-like comparison with Arise’s offer: the administrators said Arise’s offer fell below the level needed to return 25 pence in the pound to creditors, but the cited material does not establish comparable valuations or full terms for the two bids.
