Lab-Grown Diamonds vs. Moissanite: Which Is Right for You?

A lab-grown diamond is diamond; moissanite is silicon carbide. Compare material, visual character, documentation, and the full ring price to choose the stone that fits your priorities.

Choose a lab-grown diamond if having diamond material and its familiar optical profile matters most. Choose moissanite if you prefer its distinctive sparkle and are happy with a different gemstone. Neither is universally better: compare the actual stones, their documentation, and the full ring price before deciding.

What is the difference between moissanite and a lab-grown diamond?

A lab-grown diamond is diamond formed in a laboratory. Its origin differs from a mined diamond, but the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) says it has the same crystal structure and nearly the same chemical, optical, and physical properties as natural diamond. Laboratory origin is part of the stone’s identity and should be disclosed.

Moissanite is silicon carbide, not diamond. It is a separate gemstone often used as a diamond simulant: it may resemble diamond, but it is not a lab-grown or natural diamond. GIA’s 1997 article, “Synthetic Moissanite: A New Diamond Substitute”, introduced it as a near-colorless imitation produced for jewelry. GIA’s education page on simulants, moissanite, and lab-grown diamonds likewise distinguishes simulants from diamonds and notes that a simulant can be a good choice when the buyer understands what it is.

How do they look different?

Both can offer a diamond-like appearance, but they do not have identical optical behavior. Moissanite has different refractive properties and can show double refraction: under some viewing angles or magnification, facets may appear doubled. That can contribute to a visual character distinct from diamond. Whether you enjoy that look is a matter of preference, and a finished stone’s appearance also depends on its cut and lighting.

  • S925 STERLING SILVER – Crafted in S925 sterling silver with an 18K white gold plated finish; plated sterling silver, not solid 18K gold.
  • SIZE 7 ENGAGEMENT RING – The selected variation is Size 7. Please confirm the center CT, total stone weight and ring size before ordering.
  • IMOLOVE – SHINE BRIGHT, SPEND LIGHT – A lab-created moissanite pave engagement ring designed for engagements, promises and meaningful moments.

GIA’s 1997 study reports refractive indices of 2.648 and 2.691 and dispersion of 0.104 for the synthetic moissanite material examined. These gemological measurements help explain its optical behavior; they do not guarantee that every finished moissanite will look a particular way. A lab-grown diamond has the optical properties of diamond, though individual stones still differ in cut and appearance.

If appearance is central to your choice, view the specific stones in comparable lighting rather than relying only on online descriptions or a generic claim about sparkle. Ask for clear images or video if you cannot inspect them in person, and check the seller’s return terms.

Which is more durable for an engagement ring?

GIA’s 1997 research reports a Mohs hardness of 9¼ for synthetic moissanite. GIA says lab-grown diamonds have nearly the same physical properties as natural diamonds. Hardness describes resistance to scratching; it does not, by itself, establish how well a stone will resist chipping, how secure its setting will be, or how it will fare over a lifetime of wear.

What documentation should you ask for?

For a lab-grown diamond

Use diamond-specific documentation to understand the stone’s quality. GIA’s Diamond Buyer’s Guide recommends considering cut, color, clarity, and carat weight and advises buyers to request an independent grading report. Verify report details with the issuing laboratory, and confirm that the seller identifies the stone as laboratory-grown and discloses any treatment.

GIA’s laboratory-grown diamond services page describes Premium or Standard assessments for eligible loose colorless to near-colorless lab-grown diamonds weighing at least 0.15 carats, with a laser inscription identifying laboratory origin. Services and eligibility can change, so check the current terms with GIA. A report or assessment documents a diamond; it does not make moissanite a diamond.

For moissanite

Make sure the product is clearly identified as moissanite, with the relevant stone details and seller terms provided. Do not treat a diamond grading report as a requirement that makes a moissanite equivalent to a diamond; they are different materials.

Is a lab-grown diamond worth the extra cost?

There is no reliable price ratio here that makes one choice automatically better value. GIA says lab-grown diamonds are available at a reduced price point relative to natural diamonds, but that comparison does not establish current prices for lab-grown diamonds versus moissanite. Current like-for-like retail prices, resale outcomes, and investment performance are not established by the cited sources.

Compare actual stones and the complete ring price, not just a headline price per carat. Include the setting, taxes or other charges shown by the seller, and the return, warranty, and service terms. Match stones as closely as possible on the features that matter to you, then decide whether diamond material and its documentation justify the price difference for your purchase.

How to choose between them

Choose a lab-grown diamond if

  • You specifically want diamond material, rather than a diamond lookalike.
  • You prefer the optical profile of diamond.
  • Diamond grading details and documentation are important to your decision.

Choose moissanite if

  • You are comfortable buying silicon carbide rather than diamond.
  • You like the particular stone’s optical character.
  • The actual stone and complete purchase terms suit your priorities better.

Compare before you commit

  1. Confirm the material and origin in the product description and purchase documents.
  2. Inspect the actual stones side by side, if possible, under similar lighting; otherwise request reliable images or video.
  3. For a lab-grown diamond, review and independently verify its grading or quality documentation. For moissanite, confirm that it is accurately identified as moissanite.
  4. Compare the total ring prices, setting, return policy, warranty, and service terms.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
