Haji Banda Hasan opened a small Khan Market stall in 1972, and his sons Saleem and Javed later joined him in the business. After the family separated from the Khan Chacha brand, the brothers started Rule The Rolls in 2017. A 2019 report placed its Khan Market outlet next door to Khan Chacha—but the report does not establish what has happened to either business or their dispute since.
Who built Khan Chacha?
According to Akhil Sood’s 2019 report for Scroll.in, Haji Banda Hasan was born in Saharanpur in 1948 and moved to Delhi in the 1960s. He learned to cook kebabs, tikkas and Mughlai dishes from Haji Mohamad Yusuf before opening a small stall in Khan Market in 1972. The feature describes the original stall as informal and welcoming, a modest beginning for a business that would become a well-known Delhi food name. Read Sood’s account in Scroll.in.
Saleem and Javed join the business
Hasan’s sons joined at different times: Saleem in 1996 and Javed in 2000, after a corporate job. In the early business, the report says, Saleem handled cooking while Javed took orders. Javed later summed up their connection to their father’s work: “We’ve learned our skills from our father, and he’s famous all over. We are just carrying forward his legacy.” The quotation appeared in Sood’s 2019 feature.
Why the family left the Khan Chacha brand
Sood’s article reports that the stall closed abruptly for three months around 2009 amid a dispute, then reopened as a restaurant. It describes a partnership from 2010 to 2016, followed by business disagreements. By the time of the 2019 report, Hasan and his sons were no longer associated with the Khan Chacha brand, and a dispute over the name and trademark was under litigation.

The family declined to detail the dispute in the article because it was under litigation at the time. Those details describe what Scroll reported in 2019; they do not establish the legal merits or outcome of the case. No current status is established here.
How Rule The Rolls carried the family’s food forward
The brothers started Rule The Rolls in February 2017 at Galleria Market in Gurugram, according to Sood. They opened a Khan Market outlet in October of that year, which the feature described as next door to Khan Chacha. Its proximity made the family’s new venture a striking return to the same market, but it did not make Rule The Rolls a continuation of the old brand or establish that the family’s new business had rights to the Khan Chacha name.
Familiar dishes, a different format
The 2019 report describes Rule The Rolls as using Hasan’s recipes and offering familiar items such as chicken tikka roomali rolls, mutton seekh kebab rolls, paneer tikka and kakori kebabs. It also reports additions intended to change how people could order: half portions, so diners could try more than one item, and kebab burgers. The burgers were described as a top seller in Vadodara at the time—not as a current sales ranking.
Javed said in the article that the immediate plan was to develop and further organise Rule The Rolls, adding: “Whatever mistakes happened in the past, we won’t repeat them.” That was his statement about the business’s plans in 2019, not evidence of its present operations.

The available account is a dated snapshot, not a current directory or legal update. It does not verify which outlets remain open, who owns or operates either business now, what their current menus are, or how the trademark litigation ended. The reported locations and business conditions should therefore be read as historical details from 2019, not as guidance for a visit today.
