What PerthNow reported before the draw
PerthNow published its story at 2:00am on 22 August 2024, describing that night’s Powerball jackpot as $100 million and the largest since May. The article said the preceding Thursday Lotto draw had no Division One winners. It also reported that more than 205,000 Western Australian winners shared minor prizes in that Lotto draw, while one Division Two winner was set to claim $149,000. Those figures were reported by PerthNow and are not independently verified by the sources available here.
The potential record depended on a WA ticket winning the entire Powerball jackpot. The headline described a possibility, not a confirmed win or a confirmed state record.
What the article said about ticket sales
Lotterywest chief executive Colin Smith told PerthNow that sales were expected to peak between 4pm and 5pm, at around 920 tickets per minute. That was a forecast quoted before the draw, not a final or audited sales count.

For that draw day, PerthNow said tickets were available in Lotterywest stores and through the Lotterywest app until 6pm. These were details for 22 August 2024, not current ticket-sale hours or availability.
Numbers and syndicates: what the claims do—and do not—show
PerthNow listed 17, 7, 9 and 20 as the most frequent main winning numbers in its historical count, and 15, 33, 31 and 26 as the least frequent. For the Powerball number, it listed 2 and 4 as most frequent and 14 and 12 as least frequent. The article did not provide the sample period or statistical method, and those past counts do not establish that any number is more likely to be drawn next.

Smith encouraged people to consider a syndicate with family or friends, saying it could spread ticket cost and any eventual prize among participants. He also cited a group of workmates that shared a $53 million Powerball prize in October 2022. A syndicate changes how participants share the cost and any prize; it does not make a particular set of numbers more likely to win.

Lotterywest’s 12 June 2025 article covered a different $100 million Powerball draw. In that later release, Smith described an $80 million prize shared by 55 women from a northern suburbs gym in 2021 as WA’s biggest prize on record at the time. That 2025 statement is not evidence of the outcome of the August 2024 draw.
