ProPakistani reported that the port handled 8,313 transshipment containers in a 24-day period in March 2026, compared with about 8,300 across all of 2025. The short-window container count and approximate full-year comparison are the basis of the headline; the report does not provide the 24-day dates or identify its underlying data source. ProPakistani’s March 27 report attributes the activity to disruption on Middle East and Gulf routes and revised transshipment rules, but does not establish that those factors caused the increase.
What the 1,423% figure measures
The figure concerns transshipment containers: cargo moved through a port while in transit between locations, rather than the port’s entire cargo throughput. ProPakistani said Karachi Port handled 8,313 such containers in 24 days, against approximately 8,300 during 2025 as a whole. It called that change 1,423% growth.
The comparison has two important limits. First, the periods differ sharply: 24 days versus a full calendar year. Second, the source gives neither the exact dates of the 24-day window nor the dataset behind its counts. The percentage is therefore best read as the report’s characterization of a short-window transshipment count, not as an annual growth rate or an audited measure of all port activity.
Which terminals were named
The report attributed the 8,313 containers to three facilities: 5,286 at South Asia Pakistan Terminal, 1,827 at Hutchison Port, and 1,200 at Karachi Gateway Terminal. These are the figures reported by ProPakistani; its article does not name an original administrative data source.

Why shipping disruptions may matter—and what is established
ProPakistani linked the increase to disruption on Middle East and Gulf shipping routes and to revised transshipment rules. Route disruption can change the routes and transfer points carriers use, so the explanation is plausible context for a short-term rise in transshipment activity. But the report does not provide route-level data, a before-and-after breakdown, or a named expert’s assessment demonstrating that these factors produced the recorded count. Treat the explanation as attributed reporting, not a verified causal finding.
How the figure compares with official port statistics
Official figures show a more modest rise in Karachi Port’s overall cargo tonnage over a different period. The Government of Pakistan’s Pakistan Economic Survey 2025-26 records 42.03 million tonnes in July–March FY2026, up 4% from 40.38 million tonnes in the same nine months of FY2025. The FY2026 figure is provisional.

| Measure | Reported figure | Period and comparison | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Karachi transshipment containers | 8,313 | 24 days, compared with approximately 8,300 across 2025 | ProPakistani; exact 24-day dates and underlying dataset not stated |
| Karachi Port total cargo | 42.03 million tonnes | July–March FY2026; 4% above 40.38 million tonnes in July–March FY2025 | Pakistan Economic Survey 2025-26; current-period figure provisional |
| Port Qasim throughput | 36.42 million metric tonnes | July–March FY2026; up 8% year over year | Pakistan Economic Survey 2025-26 |
| Karachi Port ship calls | 2,003 calls | July 2025 to June 13, 2026; 7.5% above the corresponding previous-year period | Pakistan Press Information Department, citing KPT data; vessel calls, not cargo volume |
These numbers should not be combined into a single growth rate. They measure different things—containers, tonnes, or ship calls—and cover different time spans and scopes. Port Qasim’s official throughput rose 8% over the survey’s nine-month comparison, but that separate result does not validate the reported transshipment-container surge at Karachi Port.

More ship calls, a separate activity measure
On June 15, 2026, Pakistan’s Press Information Department said KPT data recorded 2,003 ship calls from July 2025 through June 13, 2026, 7.5% above the comparable previous-year period. It also reported gross registered tonnage of 84.43 million. Ship calls and registered tonnage describe vessel activity; neither is interchangeable with cargo tonnes or transshipment containers. The government release quoted KPT Chairman Rear Admiral (Retd) Shahid Ahmed describing the port’s role in containerized cargo, bulk commodities, and general trade.

A later full-year record claim
On June 28, Dawn reported, citing the maritime minister and the KPT website, that FY2025-26 cargo handling had exceeded the previous record of 54.685 million tonnes, set in FY2017-18, and that containerized cargo exceeded 2.65 million TEUs. This full-year claim came after the Economic Survey’s July–March cutoff, so it is not the same series or reporting window as the survey’s provisional nine-month total. Dawn’s report attributes the record claim to the minister.
July congestion and Customs response
A July 21 Radio Pakistan report, relaying a Customs press release, said combined vessel calls at South Asia Pakistan Terminal and Karachi International Container Terminal reached 56 from July 1–25, 2026, versus 49 in the same period of 2025, a reported 14.3% increase. SAPT handled 52,314 TEUs, reported as 12% higher. The report also described congestion, more than 2,000 long-stuck containers shifted to off-docks, scanners for non-intrusive inspections, and expanded clearance operations. These are contemporaneous Customs claims reported by Radio Pakistan, not evidence that the March transshipment count and the July congestion figures measure the same activity. How to read future headlines about port growth
- Check the unit: a container count, TEUs, cargo tonnes, and ship calls describe different measures.
- Check the dates: a short window compared with a full year is not an annual growth rate.
- Check the scope: a terminal-level count may not represent the whole port, and one port’s figures do not describe the national port system.
- Check the source: distinguish official administrative statistics from a news report that does not identify its underlying dataset.
- Separate correlation from cause: route disruptions may offer context, but a causal claim needs evidence linking the disruption to the measured change.
