The company said the move was intended to optimize operating expenses and reflect productivity improvements; it did not describe the cuts as a specific way to fund or speed up its Gravity electric SUV. Gravity production and deliveries later began in December 2024, according to Lucid.
How many jobs did Lucid plan to cut?
Lucid’s May 24, 2024, SEC filing described a plan to reduce its employee workforce by approximately 400 people, or approximately 6%. That is the announced plan figure, not a verified final count of employees who ultimately left. Lucid expected substantial completion by the end of the third quarter of 2024, subject to local law and consultation requirements. Lucid’s SEC filing is the primary source for the announced scope and timing.

Why did Lucid announce the reduction?
The filing said Lucid was responding to evolving business needs and productivity improvements by optimizing operating expenses. It did not say the workforce reduction was undertaken specifically to finance Gravity or accelerate its launch.
In an employee message dated May 24, 2024, CEO and CTO Peter Rawlinson wrote: “I’m confident Lucid will deliver the world’s best SUV and dramatically expand our total addressable market, but we aren’t generating revenue from the program yet.” The comment described the program’s position at that time; it should not be read as a current assessment. Rawlinson’s message, filed as an SEC exhibit, also set out the affected worker categories and support.

What did the 2024 plan mean for affected employees?
Rawlinson’s message said U.S. employees and contract workers at all levels were affected, including leadership and mid-level management. Hourly manufacturing and logistics workers were excluded from that 2024 reduction. Lucid said affected employees would receive severance, health benefits and outplacement services.
What was the estimated cost of the 2024 plan?
Lucid estimated total charges of $21 million to $25 million, primarily for severance, employee benefits, employee transition and stock-based compensation. It expected $19 million to $23 million to be recognized primarily in the second quarter of 2024, with most payments expected by the end of the third quarter. These were company estimates; actual costs could differ. The figures and qualifications appear in the May 2024 filing.
How did the cuts relate to the Gravity SUV launch?
When the workforce plan was announced, Rawlinson’s employee message targeted Gravity production for the end of 2024 and Lucid’s midsize vehicle program for late 2026. Lucid later reported that Gravity commercial production and deliveries began in December 2024. That later milestone followed the forecast, but the available company disclosures do not establish that the workforce cuts caused or enabled the SUV’s debut. Lucid’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2025 records the subsequent production history.

The 6% figure belongs to the 2024 plan. Lucid announced separate U.S. workforce actions in 2026, with different scopes and stated financial effects. The percentages apply to the workforce at the time of each plan and should not be added together as if they measured one continuing reduction.
