Lotterywest said she had remembered she had not bought a ticket and made the purchase shortly before the draw the previous month.
How did the last-minute ticket win?
Lotterywest reported that the woman bought an online System 8 entry for Millionaire Medley about 20 minutes before a draw in November 2024. The operator said the entry won Division One, worth $1 million. Its announcement, published on 5 December 2024, did not identify the draw number, exact draw date or purchase timestamp. Lotterywest’s account is the basis for the reported win; Lotterywest is Western Australia’s lottery operator.
The timing is a detail of this individual story, not evidence that buying closer to a draw improves the chance of winning. The announcement provides no evidence of any odds advantage from a late purchase.
How did she find out?
Lotterywest said the woman thought she had won Lotto, but doubted the result and called her daughter to check. Her daughter drove over to help verify it. The winner said: “My daughter lives 20 minutes away but she jumped straight in her car and came over to my house to check,” and added, “We just couldn’t believe it, you never think it’s going to be you.”

What Lotterywest said about the win
Lotterywest spokesperson Zoe Wender called it “a great end to the year and start to the festive season for our latest Division One winner.” The same 5 December 2024 announcement said Western Australia had recorded 61 Division One winners and more than $114 million in Division One prizes so far that year. Those are Lotterywest’s historical 2024 year-to-date figures, not current totals.
