Anahita Mukherji’s January 28, 2025, report for Scroll describes some Indian residents in the San Francisco Bay Area feeling less secure about being publicly visible as Donald Trump returned to office. The story is a dated, interview-based snapshot—not a poll of Indian Americans or a guide to current immigration law.
What the report describes
Mukherji’s account brings together interviews, observations and anecdotes from the Bay Area around the 2024 US election and Trump’s return to office. It sets visible local Trump support against the region’s Democratic voting history and describes what the author saw as a change in the posture of major technology companies toward Trump between 2017 and January 2025. Those are the report’s context and interpretation, not a current measure of local opinion or corporate policy.
The story’s opening family anecdote captures the uncertainty through a child’s question: “Is Donald Trump a bad guy?” The child is identified as “Niyati Sharma,” a pseudonym; the exchange illustrates one family’s experience, not a broader trend.
Why immigration status did not settle the concern
The report focuses on a tension within technology politics: some tech leaders supported high-skilled immigration, while MAGA hardliners criticized H-1B workers as competitors for US jobs. Mukherji’s interviewees described unease that was not limited to people on temporary visas. The article says visa holders, green-card holders and citizens could all feel exposed to hostility aimed at perceived identity as well as legal status.
#1 Best Overall
- Premium Embroidery: Features the iconic Make American Great Again slogan prominently stitched on the front, with 45-47 and American flag logo on each side for a patriotic statement
- Adjustable Fit: Equipped with a snap closure, this hat offers a customizable fit suitable for all head sizes, ensuring comfort and a great fit for all
- Quality Material: Made from 100% polycotton twill, providing durability and a comfortable feel for everyday wear
- Versatile Style: Available in multiple colors, including black, red and white to complement different outfits and preferences
- Proudly American-Made: Manufactured in the USA, supporting domestic craftmanship and quality standards
These categories are different: an H-1B is a temporary work visa, a green card confers permanent-resident status, and citizenship is a separate legal status. The report does not suggest that their legal rights are interchangeable; it records interviewees’ accounts of anxiety that crossed those lines.
What interviewees said about visibility and political change
Mukherji recounts residents’ reluctance to be publicly identified amid concern about anti-immigrant sentiment, as well as racialized online attacks on an Indian-American appointee. The report also recalls earlier protests against Trump administration policies. Ananya Chatterjee, whom the article identifies as an Indian immigrant on a visa, remembered: “I remember being part of a protest in San Jose against Trump’s plans to build a wall along the Mexico border and deport immigrant families.”

Together, these accounts describe conflicting pressures: some people supported skilled immigration and had previously protested restrictive policies, while the report’s interviewees also described uncertainty about how political rhetoric could affect their sense of belonging or safety. They should not be read as the views of all Indians, Indian Americans or Silicon Valley workers.

- It offers: reported personal experiences and local observations from the Bay Area, published January 28, 2025.
- It does not offer: a representative survey, exact figures on Indian-American opinion or H-1B holders, or proof of a current community-wide shift.
- Its policy references are time-bound: mentions of executive orders, lawsuits, company actions and immigration policy belong to the January 2025 context. They do not establish what rules or policies are in force now.
