Celebrity Net Worth estimates Lou Holtz’s net worth at $12 million at the time of his death. That is a third-party estimate, not a verified estate value: the site does not provide a valuation method or primary financial records. Notre Dame reported that Holtz died on March 4, 2026, at age 89.

How much was Lou Holtz worth?

The published figure is $12 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth’s page accessed in 2026. The site does not explain how it calculated the estimate. No primary estate accounting or independently verified inventory of Holtz’s assets and liabilities is established by the cited sources, so the number should not be treated as a confirmed inheritance, probate valuation, or cash balance.

Why salary figures do not verify the estimate

Holtz’s compensation is sometimes cited as evidence for his wealth, but the available figures describe different things and come from sources with different levels of verification. They cannot establish his accumulated assets, spending, investments, taxes, or liabilities.

  • In a 2019 interview with Athletic Business, Holtz recalled that his average salary during his 11 years at Notre Dame was $115,000. This is his retrospective statement, not an audited salary history.
  • Celebrity Net Worth says his Notre Dame extension terms were not disclosed, describes his annual pay as “generally understood” to have been $1 million, and lists $6 million per year as his peak South Carolina coaching salary. Those are the site’s figures, not independently verified payroll records.

The Notre Dame salary recollection is an average over a particular period; the South Carolina figure is described as a peak annual salary. Neither is equivalent to net worth, which would require accounting for assets and debts over time.

What Holtz’s career adds to the context

Holtz was a prominent college football coach and later a broadcaster, but career achievements explain his public profile rather than prove any particular valuation. Notre Dame’s 2026 obituary reports that he won 249 college games, including 100 at Notre Dame. He led the Irish to the 1988 national championship and a 12-0 season; the university also records a 64-9-1 Notre Dame record beginning with that championship season.

After leaving Notre Dame, Holtz worked as a commentator for CBS, returned to coaching at South Carolina, and retired from coaching after the 2004 season. The Associated Press obituary also recounts his later work as an ESPN broadcaster.

Books and charitable work

A 2015 Notre Dame profile lists Holtz’s books, including Winning Every Day: The Game Plan for Life, Wins, Losses and Lessons: An Autobiography, and A Teen’s Game Plan for Life. It says proceeds from three books supported his charitable foundation. The profile establishes authorship and that reported charitable connection, but does not give sales totals or the amount of money involved.
