In late February and March 2026, American Airlines temporarily carried food from the United States for some flights’ return legs from London Heathrow (LHR), rather than loading those meals in London. The workaround followed a disruption to the airline’s Heathrow catering operation and brought reduced or changed meal service on some flights. The available updates document a staged restoration through April 10, 2026, but do not establish the cause or the operation’s status on October 8, 2026.
What “double catering” meant
Normally, meals for a flight are loaded where that flight departs. During this disruption, some American flights leaving the United States carried catering for both the outbound sector and the return sector from Heathrow. The food for the return trip was therefore loaded in the U.S. instead of being supplied locally in London, according to View from the Wing’s March 1 report.
American’s customer notice, reproduced by One Mile at a Time, described temporary dining adjustments on flights to and from Heathrow. It warned that some items could be substituted and that meal selections—including preordered and special meals—could not be guaranteed. The arrangement did not mean every American flight to London was affected in the same way.
How service changed—and what the reports do not show
Contemporary accounts described less choice and altered premium-cabin dining on some flights. Details such as boxed wine, unavailable seafood, or no ice cream appeared in reports about particular services; they should not be treated as a universal description of every route, date, or cabin. The sources do not provide a verified count of affected passengers or a measured rate of missed or substituted meals.

Carrying return-flight meals from the U.S. offered a way to keep some service operating while Heathrow catering arrangements were disrupted, but the reports associate the limited catering space and provider transition with reduced or changed service. They do not establish that every passenger received the same selection, nor do they support a general comparison with service on another airline.
What happened, by date
| Date | What was reported |
|---|---|
| February 28, 2026 | One Mile at a Time reported that American had stopped catering flights out of Heathrow around this date, with the disruption continuing into the following week. Source |
| March 1, 2026 | View from the Wing reported American’s confirmation of double catering: food for the return sector was loaded in the United States. The report described fewer choices and changes to premium-cabin service. Source |
| March 10–11, 2026 | In a March base update, the Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA) said locally catered Business Class meals would resume on nearly all Heathrow departures beginning March 11. Premium Economy meals had resumed on all Heathrow flights; some service adjustments remained. Source |
| April 10, 2026 | APFA said the temporary Heathrow caterer had restored premium-cabin service but lacked the equipment or capacity to cater all cabins on 20+ Heathrow departures. Management was considering two caterers as a short-term solution, and APFA reported no firm resolution date at that time. Source |
Why the catering disruption happened is unconfirmed
Hygiene allegations circulated in contemporaneous coverage, but the material available does not verify them as the cause of American’s adjustments. View from the Wing reproduced a March 5 statement in which dnata rejected the allegations and said its Heathrow facility met food-hygiene and safety requirements. That is dnata’s response as reproduced by the outlet, not an independently retrieved statement from dnata’s own site. The reporting reviewed does not establish why American changed its catering arrangements.

What passengers can rely on now
The latest useful operational update here is APFA’s April 10, 2026 report—not a current status report for October. It records restored premium-cabin service alongside capacity problems affecting all-cabin catering on 20+ departures at that time. It does not establish whether those constraints continued after April. Passengers with an upcoming American flight should check current, flight-specific meal information with the airline, especially if relying on a special or preordered meal; the historical reports cannot predict what will be served on a particular trip.
